Spotty Shao Mao ~ 7/15/83-8/10/97 Spotty came to me in 5/84 with a badly broken leg. The vet at the animal shelter called and asked me to take him before he was euthanized. I went to meet him and he was climbing up the cage gate meowing his head off and reaching out a paw for me. Of course I took him home. He had surgery to repair his leg. It was pinned and wired and Spotty came home with a huge padded bandage. He was supposed to be kept quiet so I went to the thrift store for a playpen. Spotty wasn't having that. He was climbing out within minutes. He was a funny cat, he carried a stuffed skunk around meowing all the time. His skunk would end up by his food bowl or on the bed or sometimes outside. His meow sounded like right nooowww, which is when Spotty wanted everything. He would just appear on my lap purring whenever I sat down. When I asked him to show his spots, he would roll over and purr. He was very gentle with small animals and never hunted. One day he found an injured fledgling scrub jay in the grass and brought him to me. The bird had his claw caught in it's wing web. Spotty watched while I fixed it and let the bird go. He purred his happiness at the bird being okay. Spotty had a real attitude about cats being than he was, he used to growl out the window if he saw a bobcat outside. He loved his brothers though.
BC ~ 4/29/84-3/8/01 BC came running into the house when he was about 8 weeks old. Spotty ran out the front door and when I got him to come in, BC followed. He just moved right in, purring the whole time. He was the smartest, bravest, friendliest cat I have ever known. He stayed with Spotty when Spotty had to go the clinic for x-rays and re-checks. He would always lick his face and comfort him. BC liked to play catch with yarn balls and chase his cat fishing pole string. He thought everyone he met was his friend. He loved helping anyone fix things. Most of his helping amounted to stealing small tools and parts and hiding them. He raised foster kittens and was a very patient dad. I tried to be the best mom I could so BC like all my cats was always vaccinated. In December of 1996 I found a lump where he was vaccinated. It was vaccine associated sarcoma and it took BC's life on March 8, 2001. He was a fighter and battled this cancer to the end.
Purr ~ 5/6/85-3/19/02 Purr was the smallest and sickest of 3 litters of feral kittens brought to the animal hospital where I was working. The vet kept telling me not to get attached to him because he was not going to make it. Purr had other ideas, he had such a big heart and a gentle spirit. His purr would fill the entire treatment room and of course I fell in love with him. One night I opened his cage to say good nite before I went home from work and he climbed out on my shoulder and buried himself in my hair. He stayed there till we got home. BC loved him immediately and introduced him to Spotty. Spotty was afraid of him at first. BC had to work hard to convince him that Purr was okay. Purr was always Mama's boy. He slept with me every night and would put his arms around my neck and hug me. He loved playing with ping pong balls and sunbathing. He was very sad when BC crossed and never really was the same happy little cat again. He joined his beloved brother at the Bridge on March 19, 2002, eleven days after the anniversary of BC's crossing. These boys were all very special cats, Spotty was my heart, BC my spirit and Purr my soul. They were so cute together, they never argued over anything. As much as I miss them, I am comforted to know that they are all together at the Bridge waiting for Shimi and Sooty and me.
Daffodil ~ 8/6/96-10/16/01 Daffodil was a 2 day old duckling who was supposed to be a girl. I got her and 2 chicks from the feed store in town. Daffers outgrew the chicks rapidly and as she feathered out, he got a curled tail and it was obvious Daffodil was a boy. He had so much personality. He followed me everywhere, quacking his opinions. He loved cherry tomatoes and would catch them if you tossed them to him. He taught himself to jump up and grab pole beans right off the vine. He loved swimming and bathing in his pond and taking sunbaths. Birds fascinated him, he liked to go and eat seeds with the quail. They weren't too sure what to think of him. Sadly, Daffodil developed a seminoma in September of 2001. He was waking up from an ultrasound guided biopsy to determine if it was treatable when he crossed over. No one who knew him will ever forget him. The vet and all the nurses who were treating him cried along with me when he passed. He was good friend who always made me smile.
