Spike 1995 - May 6, 2002
Spikes Favorite Foods - Watermelon, bean burritos, cheese pizza, macaroni & cheese, steamed green beans, dandelions and field greens.
Spikes Favorite Activities - Window Watching for birds and Squirrels, swimming in the tub, napping on
mom & dad's bed, basking in the afternoon sun on the windowsill, headbobbing when he finished going potty.
Getting a bath and being wrapped up with a towel afterwards, playing in the back yard while munching on clovers and dandelions Spike was potty trained and he would go in the tub all by himself!
Spike was a free-roaming iguana that never bit anyone - even with all the pain he must have been going through. One of the pictures is a picture of Spike and Pretty Boy (Pretty Boy, the parakeet,
passed away in 1996). They used to be good friends and Spike and Pretty Boy would take baths together.
Pretty Boy used to land on Spike's tail and hand out just like it was a branch - Spike didn't mind at all.

I worked at home from 1995-June 2000 so we got to know each other really well.  Spike used to watch me
work at my computer most of the day! So, I guess that's why we became so close.
Although Spike couldn't vocalize, he said a lot with his eyes, head bobs and body language.  Spike used
to stand on my computer keyboard for attention (it would go beep... beep... beep...)  what a character!

Anyway, Spike came from my husband's pet store (we sold the store in 1998).
Someone brought Spike in when he was about 6 months old.  My husband called me up and said I had to
come in to see this really sweet iguana.  I fell in love with him immediately and took him home to live
with us. Everyone in the family, my hubby, daughter & I took care of Spike, and we all got to be really
close to him. When he stopped eating and started coughing blood in April, I knew something horrible was happening to my little boy.

The vet ran alot of blood tests, put him on antibotics and gave him shots of B12. After Xrays and and
endoscopy that yielded no answers, the vet said the only way to really help find the cause is to do exploratory surgery. I agreed to do the exploratory, I was soo scared and I wanted to save him.
I brought him back to the vet for his surgery on the morning of 5/6/2002. I dropped him off and the vet
called me a few hours later as he was closing him up and he told me that his liver was spotted and it looked
like cancer. He asked me if I wanted to send a biopsy off and I agreed.  About a half hour later, the vet
called me and said Spike was not waking up from his anesthesia yet, he would call me when he came to
but it didn't look good. A half hour later the vet called me and said he could not pick up a pulse or any respiratory signs and that Spike was gone.
That was the most horrible day of my life. I really miss Spike. I had him cremated but I haven't done
anything with the ashes yet. I also planted a tree in my back yard in his memory.

~  Lizard Longing  ~

I'm gonna tell Mama
I want an iguana,
all blinky and scaly
just like a piranha.
I don't want some flora,
I'd rather have fauna.
I'm gonna tell Mama
I want an iguana.

~  Iguana Kisses  ~

"What is an iguana kiss?" you may ask.
Iguana kisses are something kind and sweet is my response.
If you want to get one, you must provide a place for them to bask.
For iguanas don't exactly hand them out, you know.
Getting iguana kisses can seem quite a task,
But it's all worth it in the end.
Kisses from humans are much, much different.
Iguanas lick you with their little forked tounges.
They stick them out and touch them to you once it is bent.
They bring them back in as quickly as can be,
Iguana kisses are very hard to see.
I love my iguanas very, very much,
They mean a lot to us.
Although the kisses are hard to see,
Its allways nice that they choos to give them to me!

~  SPIKE, THE IGUANA  ~

Spike the iggy loved to wear hats,
and oh, how he loved his morning pats.
a scratch here, and a scratch there,
Spike loved to be scratched everywhere.
Spike was more to me than just a pet,
I loved him from the moment we met.
Spike, Spike mommas little iggy,
Spike my boy was such a little piggy.
Spike was so very easy to please,
just pass him the macaroni and cheese.
Spike the iggy was a funny little guy,
and never in his life was he shy.
My iguana named Spike was such a dear,
so cute and funny every day of the year.
Spike loved to bask in the afternoon sun,
Oh Spike watching you was so much fun.
On my computer board Spike would leap,
oh the noise as it went beep beep beep.
Spike was such a momma's boy,
and to my heart he brought so much joy.
How special it was for Spike to kiss,
Spike's kisses i will surely miss.
Just for you, Spike I planted a tree,
near the window for you to see.
Hugs and kisses to you I send,
Spike the Iguana; my best friend
