FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The PLACE Initiative Drugs Awareness Programme for Parents

New development in the process

June 2002-- Due to the vastly increasing number of young people involved in the misuse of solvents and the ever-growing figure of those who are killed by this type of abuse, The PLACE Initiative has organised a series of information evenings for parents.

These sessions aim to inform parents on the products within their homes that young people can misuse, if a parent thinks a child is involved in solvent abuse it will identify indicators that would show a child is vulnerable and at risk  from the attraction and peer pressure linked to solvent abuse.  These information evenings are designed to enable parents to recognise the dangers of everyday household products.

The first evening will take place on Monday 24th June 2002, in Brownstown Community Centre, 7.30-8.30pm.  Followed by a session on Tuesday 25th June 2002 in Killicomaine Junior High School, 7.30-8.30pm.

These sessions will be interactive and cultivating on the issue of solvent abuse and will allow parents to openly or privately discuss their concerns,  allowing them to reach for support and help if needed.

Julie McNally, Development Worker for The PLACE Initiative, commented "Research on this issue has been carried out for a number of months and we feel it is important that a programme is delivered to parents before the end of the school term.  We hope that parents feel that they can attend and know that here are channels of support available to them."
