Day 3

Walk to Tukeit - 6 hours [lunch at Tukeit]
Walk to Kaieteur top - 5 hours [stay in Guesthouse]

Sunday, March 31th, 2002 - Sunrise 5:00 am. We all slowly awake to the pitter patter of another day of rain. Amazingly enough, the rain doesn't reach us under the canopy of the age old trees. Still, our hike holds much more water for us and some rather impassable streams which require swimming and boating. Conditions like these require crossing with the help of your friends and good old fashioned team work. The water hazards are a small worry. At this point, the trek just becomes more challenging.

Given our pace through the jungle, there were bound to be a couple of misfortunes. For example, the picture to the right is a gratuitous one of Matt's buttocks. He ripped his pants on the tree log he was climbing over. Anyone have a sewing kit on them?

Why were we trucking it through the forest? Given the continuous rain, Frank was concerned that if we waited to hike up to Kaieteur on Monday (Day 4) we wouldn't be able to see the falls through the mist. We made the decision as a group to shoot for Kaieteur by evening.

Once we reached Tukeit Falls at 3 pm, we had an hour dinner break, packed up our things, and climbed up the side of the mountain. Until this point, we'd all been hiking without our gear. From Tukeit to Kaieteur, we didn't have this luxury. Everyone carried what they brought which meant 30 lbs of stuff for me! We reached Kaieteur as the sun was just about to set.
