Amethyst is a rock group based in Alberton, doing original music, mostly composed by Kris Drift, the vocalist and guitarist. Amethyst had a booming time during 2000 when we were selected for a day in the studio and a track on the 2000 SA Music Week compilation album and doing a rigorous club circuit. The past few years has seen some personnel changes and music style changes. This has caused some of the members to carry on as Driftwood, doing mostly covers and original Afrikaans songs. Glad to say though, that the original Amethyst sound is looking at making a comeback with most of the old members regrouping.

Manie left the group after only a few gigs after which Phil moved on to lead guitar and Dave came in as the bassist. This line-up continued until around 2001 when Alfie replaced Lee on drums. Around 2002 Alfie left to join Scrapmetal and Freddie became the new drummer. During 2003 Freddie, Phil and Dave joined Cedz as the Underground Blues Band with Amethyst only regrouping for special occasions. Kris kept on doing one-man shows and started Driftwood with Lee on drums and Robbie on bass.
This Driftwood line-up carried on for a while until personal problems caused a split. Phil then joined Driftwood as the bassist and Pola came in on drums.
This line-up is still doing regular gigs around Alberton. Dave has now joined Driftwood on guitar/keyboard, which now brings the line-up back to closely resemble the Amethyst line-up. Manie is also still used as a backup when Phil and Dave has other commitments.
Due to many requests for performance of the Amethyst originals, dare we hope for a return of Amethyst?
