CAL council, pub decry relocation

John Alliage Tinio Morales

Last updated December 6th, 2007

The College of Arts and Letters Student Council (CAL-SC) and Kalasag, the college’s student publication, decried the college dean’s decision to relocate the two offices without prior consultation and clear relocation plans.

The offices of CAL-SC and Kalasag are currently located at the Faculty Center (FC) basement. According to CAL Dean Virgilio Almario, the said groups will exchange offices with the CAL Office of the College Secretary (OCS), currently at AS 101 in Palma Hall for “administrative efficiency.”

“Mas importante ang AS 101 kaysa sa student council, dahil sa mga pangangailangan (ng mga estudyante), tulad ng (pagkuha ng) transcripts,” Almario said.

CAL-SC Chair Joshua Diokno, however, said that both student organizations could not transfer to their relocation office, as the administration and staff in the CAL-OCS refuse to be transferred until the FC basement is completely renovated.

Almario asked the CAL-SC and Kalasag to vacate their offices until next week to make way for inspection. He emphasized that relocation will start during the holidays to prevent interruptions in the operations of both offices.

“Ang implication ng pagpapaalis ay madali na lamang brasuhin (ng administrasyon) ang mga student formation. So dispensable lamang talaga kami,” Diokno said, adding that the plan did not undergo formal consultations before its approval.

Diokno disclosed that in a meeting with Almario last week, the student council laid down a counterproposal asking the administration to find an alternative office within FC which they can use, instead of being transferred to AS 101. So far, he said, no CAL departments has agreed to offer part of its office for the council’s and the publication’s use.

The council should be located where it is nearest to the students so that programs can be dispensed effectively and students can easily consult their grievances, Diokno added.
