Journals of a 9 day mission trip to
Baram, Sarawak Outdoor pursuit in Jungle Lodge, Gombak, Selangor Upcoming project: Turtle Camp? Comon in and see this fun volunteer camp and
join in 2003? My take on Contests and prizes ... read on.
Contests ... are they a battle of the wits or merely a marketing ploy? Can we actually be reaping fruits of our labour, spending laborious time cracking our sanity for a catchy slogan, searching high and low for answers to impossible quizzes, and licking loads of envelopes hoping we'll ace it. Well, if we try hard enough, there is surely some nice prizes to savour. Yours truly has 3 reasonable catch thus far. During my Form 6 (A-level) days, I have a passion for Malay cross word puzzles and subscribe to a Malay magazine and had won 2 RM100 cash prizes. That would just enough cover my subscription fee with a little for a nice dinner. When I was 20, I came home one day surprised to have received a nice delivery - a Philips mini Hifi (and back then, iit was most timely to replace my old radio). It was a Philips slogan contest from a youth magazine, and the prize was delivered even before the results was published. Then, in 2001, my biggest catch. The Malaysia Mega Sale MasterCard Swipe Contest. Won RM1000 worth of accommodation and meals at a hotel of my choice. After some searching, decided to stay in the 6 diamond hotel - Palace of the Golden Horses for 1 night with my family. Booked 2 rooms and the balance I used to hold a nice birthday bash with my friends. Of course, I had to chip in a little for the nice sumptuous lunch, but its an event to be remembered. Other prizes I have won include movie tickets, CDs of bands I do not follow and restaurant vouchers, but basically just the exhilaration of winning something. Now, here are my tips on winning contests: 1. Catchy, Practical, Funny slogans. Basically just show the judge you have put a lot of effort on the slogan. Catchy - look into the thesaurus or just mumble out words that rhyme; Practical - the slogan has to relate to the general public, of how useful the product is on everyday examples; Funny - be a bit out of the norm and be interesting. 2. More applications, higher chance Go ahead and send loads of envelopes/postcards with nice stamps. A slogan maybe nice but if the judge just misses it, its all effort wasted. Why not sent them at different times, so it reaches different judging periods or different judges. The bottom line is hard work reaps results !!! and captions I am less of a contest freak now but more an ardent daddy in Tokyo who blogs. I am more and more convinced that a daddy needs to blog and reflect on parenting. Since most kids these days blog, a dad needs to blog and share his dreams, his experiences as a dad and may he himself learns as well as others and his children on the wonderful experiences http://daddyparentingtips.blogspot.com/
