I can tell that you are a total agnostic. Why are you so in doubt? there's a verse in Romans about how creation has been proclaiming God's existence since its birth. its true, science says that we are all here by accident, but then what's the point to living your life? God put us on this Earth for a reason. did you know that the Bible says, that He created us for His pleasure? our creation brings Him joy! that's awesome! it gives a purpose to life. In Jeremiah 29:11 it says, "For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans of hope and a future." God has set us apart for good works in Him (in Ephesians). It says in Romans that "faith without works is dead." you said that you'd rather spend your life serving other people rather than a religious entity. you serve God by serving other people. that's part of our calling. But in the same way, works without faith is dead also. you won't be rewarded for works that you do, unless you already have salvation, which can only come from Jesus Christ. also doing good works without Christ can have wrong motives. in Romans Paul says, that there is nothing good in my flesh, but through Christ I can be made righteous. through Christ, we don't have to be a slave to sin any longer. The desire to sin can be rid from our bodies, when we walk in the Spirit.
You say that truth is subjective, but if truth is subjective then there is no such thing as "truth". There can only be one right, and others wrong. 1+1 always equals 2 you can't change that equation to match your beliefs. God is there whether we believe or not. Just like gravity is there, whether we believe it or not. you can still see its effects, but you can't actually give it a physical form. you say that God seems like a hateful God, in 1 John it says that "God is love." There can be no hate in Him. He does not hate one single person on this planet. He didn't even hate Hitler. He just hates their sin. that's not who they are, it's what they do. There's a difference between someone's character and what they do. God loves your personality, that's how He's created you, and that's how He wants you.
The interpretation of the Bible is a very controversial subject, so alls I'm going to say is that the Holy Spirit achieves its purpose through words. those words are the Word of God. Most of the Bible can be taken at face value. But other books like Revelation can be interpreted in many ways. John wrote the book of Revelation on the island of Patmos. God revealed to HIm exactly what was to come. Think about it, John had no clue what he was seeing, so he described it all as best as he could.
About why we capitalize "God" and "Him" and such, the Word says that God is the name above all names and He is worthy of all praise. it is a form of showing our reverence and praise for Him. But even in His superiority he CHOSE to die for us. He has given us the right to call HIm "friend". If you'd been the only person left on Earth, He still would have sacrificed His full godly nature to become a HUMAN sacrifice, pure and without blemish.
There's a new book out called the Da Vinci Code. it's all crap! I'm sorry, but it is. do you think that Jesus would have commisioned His disciples, then stayed with Mary? They suffered great persecution, and they did it all for His name's sake. If Paul had stolen the church from Mary, because she was a woman, would He still be giving the credit to God, rather than himself?
What if you are right about God's existence and the fact that He doesn't, and so you "live it up" down here on Earth, like what you do here doesn't matter. But what if you are wrong, and the payment for your disbelief is Hell? Think of it this way, if you believe, then if I am wrong and Christians are wrong, all you'll lose is basically nothing, but what you'd gain would be a lifetime of joy and peace.
The reason for Hell is that, God can not be around sin. It's against His nature. The people whose sins have not been washed away, have to spend an eternity away from Him.
Don't you ever feel that there has to be more than this life?
