"THE RITUAL"
- Side 1 of 'The Ritual' was also recorded at Olomana Ranch - earlier that day, before all the people showed up.
- The 'Teaser girl' sample on side 1 was borrowed from a demo that Pierre Grille had recieved in the mail, promoting the new 'Emulator' digital sampler. We liked the sound, so we threw it on the album as an afterthought.
- '1812 : The Battle' is not about the war of 1812. '1812' actually refers to the intro riff, which is in such an awkward time signature (thanks JD!) that we had to count out loud to each other in order to get through the song when we were learning it. If you count along, you'll notice the accents fall on one, eight, and twelve (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,1,2,3....) The song had no lyrics for a long time, so we just called it 'One, Eight, Twelve'. The lyrics stemmed from that.
- We played the songs on side 2 for the audience more than once, just in case someone made a mistake!
- During 'The Executioner', someone set a drink down on the spinning tape reel, slowing it down for a bar. Pierre Grille was able to splice the 16-track master tape and drop in a similar section from earlier in the song, but the guitar solo had to be overdubbed. If you listen carefully, you can hear the tone of the music change for one bar during the solo.
- MK was unhappy with part of his 'Revelation' solo, so he overdubbed one. But you can still here the original solo through ambience mikes set in the crowd.
- There are also 'ghost' background vocals in 'Revelation', but not because of overdubs. A friend of the band was sitting near one of the ambience mikes singing in harmony with the chorus.
- For an encore, SR played Iron Maiden's 'Phantom Of The Opera'. It's on the master reels, and may surface on a re-release someday...
- A rare copy of 'The Ritual' cd once sold on E-Bay for more than $100!
