Kevin had found out the name of the girl who would present the strawberries, and he had donned his macho outfit and offered her fifty dollars if she would present his box of strawberries. She asked why it meant so much, and he replied that his padre was the only real Mexican strawberry farmer in the county and he had to sell to Carrington farms, and that he was so proud of his farm and his strawberries. After a night of singing and dancing with the young senorita she accepted the money.
The day of the festival came and Kevin had Manuel pick him a special box of strawberries. Then he donned rubber gloves and put on a mask. He sprinkled Glacko on all the berries and then carefully arranged them. Afterward, he donned his disguise and met the young senorita. He gave her the box and the money, then he slipped into the crowd.
The time came and the young senorita presented the flat of freshly picked strawberries to Lily, who selected two or three. When Lily invited the girl to have a couple with her, Kevin cringed.
The girl cheerfully ate three large berries and Lily ate three, and then the girl took the box and put it where Kevin had told her. She took the original box on to the kitchen.
Kevin watched closely as Lily waved and declared the festival open. And then, to everyone's horror, she grabbed her throat and fell to the floor of the rostrum. Within five minutes Lily Carrington was dead.
Kevin retrieved the special box of strawberries, put them in a plastic bag, sealed it, and put it in his car.
