    Backups and Precautions

Here I will discuss ways to prevent data loss. There are three important things that will prevent it. The first is too backup your phone numbers. Most Ipaq pocket pcs have software built in that lets you save all your contacts and appointments. The location of this piece of software is different between models but look in you programs folder for it.

Second, when you sync go to tools, backup/restore. There is an option that lets you do a backup every time you sync. This way you will always have a full backup. If you get a hard reset then simply sync and select guest partnership. Then do a restore in the backup/restore options and you have your device back again.

The third is to keep your battery charged. Be sure that it can always charge. A good plan is to put it in the charger when you sleep and have a charger at work. Then put the device in the cradle and let it charge when you don’t have to be mobile. Look in the Q&A section for more tips on battery life.

    LED Lights

Most pocket pc’s have LED lights that show the actions of the pocket pc. I will try to make a complete LED guide but need help. I have only owned 3 models.( [email protected] )

    Ipaq

Green light blinking on left side=A notification has been triggered.

Blue light on left side=Bluetooth radio has been activated.

The LED lights occasionally malfunction. I have only had trouble with the notification light and the wifi light. The notification light can go off for three reasons. First check the alarms. Second check the sounds and notifications. Third check any appointments.

    Learning on your own

Give a man a fish he eats for a day, teach a man to fish he has food all his life. I think it is vital that people with questions know where to turn. I would like to show you some good places to start.

The most important part is to explore. Just go through your pocket pc and open every program one at a time and look around. Open options, look at buttons and take notes. You will notice little things like if you are in a program like word and go to the start bar and select Help, the help file for pocket word will come up.

Secondly, if you want programs, and you don’t know where to look just go to www.google.com and do a search for: “Pocket PC” freeware (then a type of software you are looking for such as calculator) and hit enter. There is also a place called www.pocketpcmag.com I don’t suggest buying the magazine (it’s a rip off) but there is a lot of information like what is the best software and where to get it. www.handango.com has tons of software for PDA’s as well as www.pocketgear.com.

The third is to join a forum. What better way to get help or help those who can benefit from your wisdom? www.pdastreet.com has in my opinion the best forums if you have a Dell or Ipaq. There isn’t much in the other pocket pc parts. The users are nice and helpful. www.brighthand.com is a good place to go but there are a lot of people and I haven’t found them to be helpful. While I was an active member there it felt like people were more interested in showing off their devices than helping people. Doing a search on google for pocket pc forums produces a plethora of results if you don’t like either of the mentioned before. (My username is strickjh05 in both)

    Forum Courtesies

If you decide to become a contributing member of a forum please keep a few things in mind. I think the most important rule is to look for a search bar in the site. Look for your question before you ask. There are many repeated questions floating around and to keep the forum running smoothly, keeping clutter down is important. However, if the posts that you have found from searching do not fully answer your question, please post a reply asking for clarification or more details. Next, post a question in one area. It doesn’t matter if there are many brands or subsections of Pocket PCs because members frequently check all of them. Posting multiple times with the same question on the same site creates clutter. This clutter is unnecessary and annoying.

While posting there is an etiquette standard. To be helped you cannot just say that something isn’t working. You need to try to be complete, concise and complete. Add details like the model number of your pocket pc and what version of programs you are running. This will help your fellow members answer your questions more easily. Excessive capitalization and punctuation is annoying and may get you ignored by members. Remember that we know a problem is important and that you need help. However most people do not like being yelled at. Before posting a reply, read the entire thread. This will help you understand more about your device even if it is unrelated to what you want. This information may help you, or others down the line.

While writing, using bb font such as [i] (to italicize) and [u] (to underline) can be helpful in emphasizing one point or word instead of just putting everything in all caps. Here are a few examples of good posts.

    QuestionCalendar, Contacts not syncing

I have a user at my company who cannot sync her calendar, contacts and tasks with active sync. Her inbox will sync fine but when you go into options the boxes to checkmark for calendar etc are gone. I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling Active sync v 3.5 which came with her handheld but this did not help. I tried the server settings, entered the exchange server, username, password and domain but this did not help. I noticed when you pull the pda out of the cradle and go back into options the boxes are there. I tried checkmarking them but they disappear when i cradle the pda. I got a message that the calendar etc were not installed. I deleted her exchange profile and rebuilt it but that did not help.

She is running Windows 2000 Pro, Office XP, and has a Compaq IPaq H3800 Pocket PC.

When I uninstalled i unplugged the cradle, rebooted, installed and then plugged the cradle back in. It can detect her previous partnership but will not give me the boxes to checkmark. Any suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Randy

This is a good example of a post because it is clear. The problem is evident and there is no lack of information. It was also written politely and even seemed friendly at the end because he has the little thanks, Randy. Here is an interesting post.

    Ipaq in align screen loop.

I recently was given a Ipaq 3630 Pocket PC which needed an internal battery replacement & some screws (which I need to still find for the case). The unit worked fine while in the cradle connect to the AC power unit or with an expansion pack (for a short time) until the battery started to run low so I purchased a new battery. (I even upgraded it to Windows Pocket PC 2002 & Active sync 3.7) I backed up everything to my CF card & decided to install the new battery and stylus lock when I restarted the unit it rebooted like normal and started with the alignment screen and responds to the touch screen but just keeps resetting back to the beginning of the alignment process. I am hoping that this is not a big issue to fix since I have not found any troubleshooting answers on this but have a lot of the accessories that go with this & hope that it may be fairly inexpensive to fix without replacing the unit. Please help get me out of the alignment loop!

There are a few things that I like about this post. It is very clear what relevant programs are being used. The history that pertains to the problem is given and the author has described the problem in a clear detail. What I don’t like about this post is that it has no organization. Making a few paragraphs out of this would have made it easier to read.

I think the most important rule is this: Do not seek help if you are unwilling to give help. I have gotten a lot from my favorite forum (PDA street) and have given back a lot as well. It frustrates me that people would sign up for a day and post a question, then never come back. Please, if you are helped, return the favor a couple times.

    Q. & A.

    Q.

    My pocket pc isn’t responding.

    A.

If you haven’t charged it in a couple days your batteries are probably gone. If it isn’t the battery then do a soft reset. Different models reset differently and this will stop running programs and fix 90% of problems you have.

    Q.

My device is really slow. A lot slower than when I first got it.

    A.

You probably have too much stuff in RAM. Close running programs as discussed in the RAM section. If this doesn’t help do a soft reset. This will stop programs from running in the background.

    Q.

Not all of my appointments/ contacts/ tasks are appearing when I go to the program.

    A.

These are divided into categories and to improve organization only items in the selected category are shown. Simply tap the arrow at the top left corner and select “All”. This will show all of the items. You can also change categories by pressing the assigned button multiple times while the program is running.

    Q.

My device turns on for no good reason.

    A.

Some devices have reportedly turned on to alert the owner of things such as appointments, tasks or if any button is pressed. Newer models have a button lock feature that is extremely helpful. Simply go to start, settings, buttons. There should be a tab that says lock. If there is not then you can disable the button that gets pressed on accident. From the lock menu there is an option to disable/lock buttons while the device is off. This makes sure the device cant be turned on unless the power button is pressed.

    Q.

    My battery dies really fast.

    A.

Turn off radios. Having Bluetooth and wifi on when they are not needed drains you battery really quickly. Turn down your backlight. Go to start, settings, control, and brightness. Slide the bar down until it is at the lowest setting (off) and then go up one (lowest on). He difference between the lowest and brightest is about an hour of use.

    Q.

When I use windows media player and put it in my pocket, some times I accidentally tap the screen, then the music changes or stops.

    A.

In Windows media player, tap Tools > Settings > Buttons. In the “Select Function” dropdown menu, tap a function (Toggle Screen). On your Pocket PC, press a hardware button you want to use and tap ok.

    Q.

My screen is messed up, I tap in one place and my pocket pc thinks I’m tapping in another.

    A.

Press all four buttons down at once on the bottom. This will bring you to a screen alignment program where you can recalibrate your screen. If your device doesn't support this you can go to Start > Settings > System > Screen. Then follow the directions.

    Q.

How do I get rid of the annoying beeps every time I do something?

    A.

Go to Start, settings, sounds and notifications. Disable system warning. This will prevent the operating system from making noise but games and windows media player will still play. You can also change the sound by tapping the speaker symbol next to the clock and adjusting it there.
