SOCIAL SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

PATH West Midlands Route 1 Programme

In 1997 PATH obtained a grant from the National Lotteries Charities Board to implement its life and social skills programme known as PATH Route 1. Route 1 is a unique pro-active, pre-vocation, pre-recruitment programme, which specialises in the needs of black and ethnic minority peoples. It is composed of a modular programme of activities tailored to the needs of the client. Route 1 specifically deals with those in the communiy that often fall through the cracks or whose life circumstances often excludes them from accessing fully main stream provision. The programme enables and empowers the individual to not only see their vision, but to gain the tools and resources to achieve it.

One key element is a personal development course, which is soon to be accredited by the Open College Network and addresses the issues of race and culture and dealing with clients goals.

During the last 18 months PATH has:

  • Made over 200 appointments with individuals wishing to benefit from the Route 1 Programme

  • Completed 140 in-depth assesment interviews.

  • Formulated 75 personal development plans.

  • Achieved 56 positive outcomes of either jobs, work experience, further and higher education, or self employment.

On average the Route 1 program works for 24.5 hours with each client to achieve these outcomes, and has recieved a 20% response to evaluations which says that Route 1 is exceeding the expectations of its clients.

PATH Route 1 offers the following support:

  • Initial Assessment.

  • Mentoring/Counselling.

  • Career advice and Direction.

  • CV Compilation/Improvement
