INTRODUCTION
Background
Path West Midlands was set up in 1987 by a group of concerned individuals from both the voluntary and public sectors. Its prime aim is to address the under-representation of people from black and ethnic communities. It is a voluntary orgainistation with charitable status, and a company limited by guarantee.
Since 1987 PATH has recruited 139 professional trainees with an 80% success rate of obtaining employment in the areas they were trained.
In the past, training has predominantley been in housing management, but in recent years PATH West Midlands has evolved with the market promoting greater representation of management positions in financial and technical services, including surveying.
The 1996 evaluation by 'The Department of the Environment' discovered that:-
'Most trainees felt that PATH has succeded in equipping them with relevant skills for employment, providing increased confidence and a sense of personal value and potential'
Our Mission:
Both nationally and locally there is evidence that people from black and minority ethnic backgrounds suffer more unemployment than their white counterparts. Where employed, they are generally concentrated in lower grades, with lower paid jobs and are generally under-represented and professional, technical and managerial levels of the workforce.
Our mission is therefore:
To raise awareness of under-representation from black and minority ethnic communities in employment, especially at supervised levels
To provide comprehensive training incorperating practical and technical elements which will enable these under-represented groups to compete equally for jobs and training oppurtunities
PATH Objectives:
Challenge racism and discrimination at every opportunity.
Expand its services to create more opportunities for people from black and minority ethnic communities through short term training programmes.
To provide a base for those requiring advice and councelling to come and be accepted
