| Questions you may have about puppy mills that we didn't answer! |
| What is a puppy mill? Good question. Puppy mills are large-scale commercial breeding facilties with many different breeds of dogs. They primarily sell to retail pet shops, but also to individual buyers. The dogs are bred entirely for profit, with no concern of the dogs' health or well-being. The dogs are force-bred continuously, more than they should be, and the facility is often full of filth and disease. Overall, the living conditions are unfit for the animals. Many dogs become sickly and die because of the horrible conditions, but the owners do not care because they are only in the business for the money. The area in which the dogs are bred, born, and live are usually off-limits to the public. Despite all this, there are an estimated 4,000 mills in the US today, producing more than half a million puppies a year. I don't want my dog sent to a puppy mill! Don't worry, your dog won't go to a puppy mill. Puppy mill dogs that are used for breeding are born at puppy mills most of the time. There is no way that your dog could end up there. Puppy mills are not pounds. Your dog will never "get sent" to a puppy mill. (Unless you sold your dog to a puppy mill or something... which is highly unlikely!) Why don't people do something to stop puppy mills? Believe me, many people are trying to end puppy mills. The thing is that a lot of people don't know anything about them. We need to get more people educated about mills, and more ag. officials to inspect puppy mill owners. Don't you think its a little suspicious if the AKC (American Kennel Club) is always getting a call for 40 AKC registrations at a time? Also, it's pretty obvious that a place is a mill if they are selling 20 different breeds of dogs or more. I would think that is something to look into. Where are puppy mills located? Puppy mills are located in many places across the country?. Mostly in eastern, midwestern, and middle states. Pennsylvania has a high rate of mills. It isn't uncommon to find a puppy mill in the western states either. Some mills are private and they only sell to pet shops, therefore making it hard for animal rights officers to discover it. Do you rescue puppies? In a way, yes, but we don't take the dogs ourselves. I know we are called PA Puppy Mill Rescue, but no, we don't have an adoption center or anything. What we do is shut down puppy mills by investigating them and then reporting them, and if we succeed we will not take the puppies. We would love to, but we simply can't for many reasons. Don't worry though, we would make sure the puppies and dogs are put up for adoption and get a loving home. Where should I get my dog? Go to your local ASPCA, Humane Society, or shelter. There are lots of homeless dogs and cats there that need loving homes. Or, if your looking for a purebred, find a good breeder that specializes in one breed. You can find lots of breeders in the newspaper, but beware of long lists of breeds, which are usually mills. Also, maybe a friend or relatives' dog is having puppies... NEVER buy from puppy mills or pet shops. More is on the way. Want to add something? Got a question? Just email us! |
