Origami dates all the way back to the eighth century. The first traces of paper folding was during the Heian Period. During that period origami was used for wrapping gifts and making envelops. The empresses also made dolls with origami during this time. During the Edo period, the government used origami differently. They cut and layered paper. During the Meiji era they taught origami in school. Back then in the 1800’s, people of high rank used origami. Commoners and people of other classes could not do origami because paper was expensive and scarce. As time went on paper became more available.

There were many people who were pioneers of Origami. One of the first ones was Spanish philosopher and writer Miguel de Unemuno. He made many new animal designs with paper which paved the way for other expert paper folders. He discovered the side ways turn technique. He and his followers led an origami movement in Argentina and Spain. Though, origami only went as far as fellow Spaniards, he led the way for his predecessor Akira Yoshizawa.

Akira Yoshizawa is considered the founder of modern origami. He made innovations with origami; for example, he discovered the technique of back coating and made four legged animals. One of his bigger innovations was making bases for the animals he created. Sam Rendlett and he are probably most famous for making an instruction booklet which was easy to follow. They created the diagrams you see today in origami books. Akira and Sam found that using arrows and lines were the best way to teach a beginner and make them an expert folder.

Origami was also famous in Germany. Friedrick Froebel help develop origami in Germany. He started the kindergarten movement. He taught his kindergarten class origami as a way of recreation. This idea slowly spread. A German lady visited Japan and also taught a class origami. The children enjoyed it and it had plenty of success. In Japan, they slowly brought it from the homes to the schools.

Kids slowly caught on to origami as it was taught in school more and more. It went from only royalty folding origami to kids being experts. Origami has made significant progress overtime, which ranged from envelopes to animals. People also used origami for ceremonies like weddings.
