Kirigami is the art of cutting pieces of paper into artistic designs using basic tools such as glue and scissors. The word kirigami comes from the Japanese word “Kiri” meaning to cut, and “Kami” meaning paper.

Paper cutting originated in China during the fourth or fifth after paper was invented. Members of the royal court made paper cutouts for embroidery pattern designs. Over time commoners started doing paper cutting as an art.

In the 17th century paper cutting spread to Japan. The Samurai placed many different symbols and crests on top of their armor. People used Kirigami to make replicas of the symbols and crests. Kirigami was also used for traditional and religious beliefs. Kirigami gradually faded out due to Origami becoming more popular. Today Krigami is used as an art and is known around the world.
