The Humming Bird Legend
There
were two tribes of native people who hated each other. However, a young couple
coming from the different tribes met regularly in a
forest area which had been set as a boundary.
Her name was Tala and his name was Aguará. One day it began to rain heavily and
the couple could not return to their homes. Their parents started looking for
them. When they found Tala and Aguará, they decided to punish them because they
had disobeyed the rule that said that members from the two different tribes
could not have contact with one another. Aguará had to stay alone in the forest
until he was 15 years old;
Tala was locked in a hut until she was 15 years old. Besides, she would have to
marry a member of his tribe.
Tala was very sad and she cried so loudly that the
wind heard her and learned about her sorrow. Aguará called out Tala´s name but
she did not answer. The sky heard Aguará and explained that Tala had preferred
to die rather than marry another man. So, the wind had turned her into a
beautiful flower in order to save her life.
Aguará wanted to know which flower she was but “the wind is blind” and could not
see which flower
Tala had become.
For
this reason, Aguará asked the moon to help him. He wanted to become a fast
moving bird which could kiss many flowers in a short time and finally could find
where his love was hidden!
The sympathetic moon fulfilled Aguará´s wish and turned him into a beautiful
small bird with shining feathers and a long beak. Since that moment the humming
bird has been flying over mountains, forests , jungles and gardens hoping to
find his lover´s soul inside a flower.
