In South America both light and serious opera have filled the beautiful, large opera houses. While many South American composers have written operas, until recently only one, the Brazilian Antonio Carlos Gomes (1836-96), had been internationally successful. His "Il Guarany", which has elements of native Brazilian music, has been played in many opera houses throughout the world, although only its overture survives today, mostly in an arrangement for band. In 1966 the Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera received acclaim for his "Don Rodrigo" when it was performed by the New York City Opera Company. |
