OPERA IN REVIEW
Opera has not been an art form that goes on quietly repeating itself. It has always changed in response to changing social conditions, taking on whatever new shape is necessary. Today it is finding new audiences all over the world, as completly new groups of people are being attracted to cultural events. Many of this people will want to explore the great treasure-trove of operas already written. New opera companies will come into existence. Faced with new audiences and equipped with new technology, the opera composer of the future will undoubtedly find new forms of musical theater that will fit the cultural needs of his public. These new forms will disturb many people who think that opera means only "Mozart," "Wagner," or "Verdi" forgetting that throughout music's history there has never been a simple answer to the question "What is opera?"
