Notes from Safety Committee
Meeting June 5, 2002

This was the last meeting to be held for the current school year.
The meeting started promptly at six p.m. and concluded at seven p.m.
For the most part the agenda dealt with issues that have be on going for sometime, and the meeting was primarily an update on the progress of these issues.

  • Discipline: It is still hoped that the committee and schools can work out a policy that will be universal.

  • Among the ideas presented was that each of the schools hold assemblies, perhaps three times during the school year, outlining policy to be followed by students riding a school bus, and the consequence for not abiding by the rules.

  • Posting a sign within the buses stating what is non- acceptable bus behavior

  • Notifying parents before the school year what the bus rules will be.

  • Finding a solution to the unacceptable traffic conditions at Batcheller School regarding cars vs school buses.

  • Obtaining lists of students that ride each route and keeping this information on buses.

  • Determine just how many students are entitled to ride a bus.

  • Redoing the routes with the goal of limiting the number of students to 48-50 per bus.

  • Air Conditioning is still a critical issue on Type Two vehicles.

  • It was reported to the committee that on Friday May 24th, the temperature inside the bus never went below 98 and reached a high of 112. This occurred during the afternoon run on that date.

  • Efforts continue to make Oak Street one-way.
