NOTES FROM MEETING :
MARCH 19, 2002 AT THE HOME OF RUTH SCHIBI
Meeting ran about One and a Half hours.
Items discussed:
LAST MEETING, Feb. 27, 2002. why it was held (for drivers with less than five years service) and outline of what was accomplished. Interesting to note that of 13 drivers with fewer than five years service only 3 showed up today.
A primary reason for this meeting was to help make them feel that they are apart of this team. It will be interesting to hear their comments and even more interesting to see if they show up in May.
CHILDREN AT SAFETY MEETINGS
Group was told that Jody was given a letter asking for her, Karen and Laidlaw's help in resolving what many
Drivers, especially newer drivers feel is an important issue. That being to find a way to care for their children so that they might attend normal safety meetings and not have to contend with unscheduled make up meetings.
AFLEC INSURANCE
Discussion on the merit of looking into their Accident, Income and Cancer insurance met with overwhelming support. It was decided to do follow up research with the prospect of asking them (Aflec) to present a proposal to our drivers.
SAFETY COMMITTEE / B.O.E.
It was spelled out to those present how these groups came to be and what their goals are.
PLANS MAY MEETING
Co-Chairpersons for our next meeting will be Sandy Ransom and Dawn LaGassie.
Meeting scheduled to be held at Ruth Schibi's home.
It was strongly suggested that George Brier be in attendance.
Drivers have been asked to start compiling lists of items they would like to see included in our next contract.
HARTLAND CONCERNS
Hartland drivers voiced serious concern with the total disregard for student safety by a number of parents as well as school personnel.
There are reports of parents driving through flashing bus lights on either side of the buses that are in the process of either loading or dropping off children at the school.
A formal complaint on this matter is being prepared and will be presented to all parties involved with carrying out safety policies.
Another issue, the half open gate at the terminal. I discussed this with Jody today, and was assured by her that the gate in question will be fully open until at least four thirty on days that Hartland has school. She spoke to Dave, the garage manager, to insure that his men comply with this request.
VIRGINIA DiBIASE made a super case why drivers should not be considered as part-time employees due to the demands on their time, made by the bus companies, between the hours of 6:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. This will definitely be an issue for consideration at contract time.
Another valid case was presented (by Cindy Resha) asking for the company to provide and pay for not only FLU SHOTS but HEPATITIS SHOTS as well.
A major concern is one that addresses drivers be paid when they are denied work through no fault of their own.
Case in point: If Bonnie's student does not go to school for whatever reason, she receives no pay for that time.
It is my belief that the company is being paid and so should the employee, I further believe the driver should be paid whether or not the company is paid for this time.
