STAR TOPOLOGY
Definition :
- All the computers and other devices on the network connect to a central device (hub/switch), thus forming a star.
- Two types of devices that provide a common central
connection point to all the other devices on the network are a hub and
a switch.
How data is transmit :
- In a star network, data, instructions and informations transfer from one node to another node passes through hub / switch.
- If the network used hub, the signal will send to all nodes
but only the intended recipient will accept the signal and the rest
will ignore.
- If the network used switch, the signal will send directly to the intended recipient.
Advantages :
1. If one device (pc/printer) fails, only that device is affected.
2. Devices (pc/printer) can be added to or removed from network with little or no distruption.
Disadvantages :
1. If the hub or switch fails, the entire network will be malfunction.
2. Requires more cable than most of the other topologies.
