A
poem compresses much in a small space and adds music, thus heightening
its meaning. The city is like poetry: it compresses all life, all faces
and breeds, into a small island and adds music and the accompaniment
of internal engines. The island of Manhattan is without any doubt the
greatest human concentrate on earth, the poem whose magic is comprehensible
to mil- lions of permanent residents but whose full meaning will always
remain elusive. At the feet of the tallest and plushiest offices lie
the crummiest slums. The genteel mysteries housed in the Riverside Church
are only a few blocks from the voodoo charms of Harlem. The merchant
princes, riding to Wall Street in their limousines clown the East River
Drive, pass within a few hundred yards of the gypsy kings; but the princes
do not know they are passing kings, and the kings are not up yet anyway-they
live a more leisurely life than the princes and get drunk more consistently.

persistentes” Here is New York by E. B. White, New York, 1949

Bookroom, New York, 1999, pp. 29-30).
Olerki
batek
asko dauka bere barnean hain toki txikian, eta doinua gehitzen dio.
Hiria olerkia bezala da: bizitza barneratzen du, arraza guztiak, lurpeko
bideak eta doinua gehitzen duen uharte txiki bat. Manhattaneko uhartea,
zalantza gabe, Lurreko giza kontzentrazio handiena da, milioika hiritarrentzat
ulergarria den olerki bat, baina inoiz bere esannahia harrapatzerik
ez dagoena. Luxu handieneko bulego garaienen ondoan, auzategi behartsuak
agertzen dira. Riversideko liturgia fina, Harlem-eko errito Vodooetatik
bloke batzuetara baino ez da ospatzen. Merkatari garrantzitsuenak beren
limusinetan, Wall Streeteko bidean ekialdeko ertz miresgarritik, ijitu
erregeetatik iarda batzuetara baino ez dira igarotzen; nahiz eta printzeak
ez diren konturatzen erregeen ondotik arin igarotzen ari diren, eta
hauek ez dira ohartzen printzipeen pasoaz ezta hauen bizitza lasaiaz
ezta hauen mozkorraldi luzeez" Here is New York by E. B. White,
