III.  League Play

1.  Competing in the League
a.  Categories
Each franchise will compete in both batting and pitching categories.  The ten (10) categories in which both teams will compete are as follows:

BATTING               PITCHING
1. Batting average        Earned Run Average
2. Home Runs             Wins
3. Runs Batted in         Strikeouts
4. Stolen Bases            Saves
5. Runs                       Walks Plus Hits per Innings Pitched

All categories, with the exception of batting average, earned run average, and walks plus hits per innings pitched, are calculated by adding a franchise's starting roster number together.

Batting average is calculated by adding together the total at-bats for a franchise's starting offensive players and dividing them by the total number of hits for the frachise's starting offensive players.

Earned run average is calculated by adding together the total number of innings pitched by a franchise's nine (9) roster pitchers and dividing that by the total number of earned runs for the pitching staff, then multiply that number by nine (9).

Please note: Third innings must be added together to determine whole innings pitched, remembering that there are three tenths (3/10) to a full inning.  For example, 1.2 innings pitched plus 1.2  innings pitched equals 3.1 innings pitched.

Walks plus hits per innings pitched is determined by adding together the franchise's rotation's total number of hits plus the the total number of walks and dividing that number by the total number of innings pitched by the rotation.

b.  Object of the League
Each team will compete against another team in the league each week.  The team who wins the most of the 10 categories we used last year, wins the game for the week.
NOTE: In the case of a tie game, the tie breaker will be determined, but will likely entail something like hits plus wins+saves to ensure that the best team for that week wins, rather than something totally random.
There will be a playoff format at the end of the year for a period that will be determined.  I would like to have 10 teams in the league.  I will likely allow 6-8 teams into the playoffs, and each round will be 1 game (1 week)..

c.  Winning Specific Categories
The placing in a category will be determined as follows:

OFFENSIVE CATEGORIES
1. Batting average: by the
highest team batting average
2. Home Runs: by the
most team home runs
3. Runs Batted in: by the
most team ruuns batted in
4. Stolen Bases: by the
most team stolen bases
5. Runs: by the
most team runs scored

PITCHING CATEGORIES
1. Earned Run Average: by the
lowest team average
2. Wins: by the
most team wins
3. Strikeouts: by the
most team strikeouts
4. Saves: by the
most team saves
5. Walks Plus Hits per Innings Pitched: by the
least walks plus hits per innings pitched

Note that pitching and offensive categories are each worth equal amounts of points towards the determination of which team won the game for that week.

As of right now, the tie breaker for a week's game is total bases for the starters - when setting up the league, I thought that that was the best indication of how a team performed offensively in a given week, since people rarely are able to figure out OPS for fun.  Additionally, you can only use an offensive OR pitching category - which makes it hard.  So, since there are more offensive than pitching players on a team, I opted for an offensive category.
