preface

The field-crop research findings, generated through field/laboratory experiments, in the form of 'abstract', in the 'Field Crop Research by a Scientist', were arranged with serial numbers, as were published, in different years starting from 1968 and ending upto 2002, for the benefit of the agricultural students, research scholars, research scientists, extension personnel, farming community and planners, though the research programme was originally initiated in 1965 in the fields. In the content, only the crop, situations and treatments have been referred for convenience, beside the year of publication.

During the 38-year research programmes with different field crops in West Bengal, both under irrigated and rainfed conditions, efforts have been made to throw the light on the followings :

i) Technologies for higher crop production in respect of crop management, on (a) Fertilizers, (b) Irrigation, (c) Weed Control, (d) Planting time and method, (e) Residue management, (f) Tillage operation, (g) Mulching (h) Green manuring etc (i) Cropping system etc.

ii) Development of cropping systems under (a) Irrigated and (b) Rainfed conditions.

iii) Soil fertility maintenance in the cropping system, in respect of nitrogen, phophate, potash, organic carbon, pH etc.

iv) 'Paira' (no-tillage relay) cropping system under rainfed conditions in differnt seasons.

v) Establishment of formula for estimation of yield of crops, specially the bast fibre crops and

vi) Other methodologies and aspects on crop, soils and situations.

The findings, noted here, are very valuable. I shall be highly obliged, if all these findings are used by the persons for whom this book was written, based on research experiments in the fields. This is a new type of book for research purposes.
