"not since the Carpenters has a group so effectively juxtaposed a dispassionate voice with such upbeat, vacuum packed pop"
--the New York Times

For me, the Pet Shop Boys are more than merely "the quintessential 80's act" as Rolling Stone once called them. They provided the soundtrack to many a sensitive young lads formative high school years, including mine. Indeed, for the past two decades, the Boys' diminutive appearance has belied their huge orchestral arrangements, grandiose video presence and outlandish lyrics.  They continue to make intelligent pop music in the 21st century, and have finally begun to inspire tribute projects.
Like most Americans,
West End Girls was my first exposure to the PSB style of pop music. Dark, poetic, subtly catchy and danceable this song about Jack the Ripper went on to become their only American number one hit, but the first of many in the UK and around the world. Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe have worked with such unique and acclaimed producers from Bobby O to Julian Mendelsohn to Trevor Horn and in the process, became patron saints of the beautiful, introspective, sometimes haunting and often tongue-in-cheek brand of the euro-pop sound they helped invent.
