Religion & Spirituality
I don't believe in God any more than I believe in leprechauns, unicorns or mermaids. What you believe in is your business and I respect your beliefs as being right--for you. But for me, there are far too many injustices and problems to believe that some wonderfully benevolent and omnipotent being is watching over us.
First of all, it simply cannot be proven that such a being exists. And here, the burden of proof lies with the believers. God is something that cannot be perceived with any human sense, yet we are asked to swallow a dogma that insists that God is everywhere and everything. The Bible states repeatedley that God is Father, Son and Holy Ghost. A being that is truly all things couldn't be confined to a gender, a disposition or a number, could it?
If the very existence of God can be called into question, what then of the church and organized religion? Glad you asked. What religion and churches offer humankind is community. A fellowship to belong to and acceptance are vital to emotional well-being and development. We need them. That is why it feels good to attend church and pray en masse for many. But where God is seen as perfect, the church is run by men who are most imperfect creatures themselves.  What more proof do you need but the nutty array of religious wackos on cable tv demanding money(see below), the archaic guidelines that religious bodies endorse that do nothing to help mankind, the ever-worsening Catholic sex scandals, and the religious fanatics that blow themselves and others to bits daily in the Middle East?!?
Becoming an atheist did nothing to help my popularity among anyone other than maybe other atheists. But it's a decision I feel proud to have come to. It's entirely possible to live your life as a good and decent person and not believe in God. It is wholly American to support the exclusion of a Christian or any other incarnation of a Supreme Being from public institutions. Belief in God, prayer, faith, puppy dogs, apple pie are just a big distraction.
Focus instead on the here and now. Faith gets you nowhere. Action gets you everywhere. Stop praying for the things you need and want and work for them. The power is YOURS to command. Do this and you will  regret absolutely nothing.

..."religion is not very efficient. There is a lot more I could be doing on a Sunday morning."
--Bill Gates

"
If there is a god that would damn his children forever, I would rather go to Hell than go to Heaven and keep the company of such an infamous tyrant. I make my choice now. I despise that doctrine. It has covered the cheeks of the world with tears. It has polluted the hearts of children and poisoned the imaginations of men. It has been a constant pain, a perpetual terror to every good man, woman and child. It has filled the good with horror and with fear, but it has had no effect on the infamous and the base. It has wrung the hearts of the tender and furrowed the cheeks of the good. This doctrine should never be preached again. What right have you, Mr Clergyman, sir, you, minister of the Gospel, to stand at the portals of the tomb, at the vestibule of eternity and fill the future with horror and with fear? I do not believe this doctrine,  neither do you. If you did, you could not sleep one moment. Any man who believes it, and has within his breast a decent throbbing heart will go insane. Any man who believes that doctrine and does not go insane has within him the heart of a snake and the conscience of a hyeana."

Robert G Ingersoll, 1877

"You talk of Heaven pointing with your fingers over your head. What Heaven is there? Ther is only air, clouds that give rain, lightning whihc makes a loud sound and breaks tree branches, and birds flying. There are no boys with wings or any ladies or  gentlemen sitting on clouds. In order to have the priest appease these idols to spare you, you must give this money to the priest. Does this fear stop the beggars, the poor people and the jobless miners from sneaking into the houses of the rich people, the grocery stores, the clothing stores of the
gabachos and the haciendas of the gringos and taking from them a little of what they need? What about you, old fool? If there really is a Holy Virgin, or anyone up in the air, tell them to send lightning to strike me down or let the stones of the vault fall on my head. If you are unable to do that, Mr. Priest, you are nothing but a puppet taking money from stupid old women. You are no better than the clown in the circus coaxing coins from the public. If God doesn't stop me, then there must be no God. Get out of here! You see, there is no God! You're all stupid cows!"

"I've been reading about reincarnation, and the Buddhists say we come back as animals and refer to them as lesser beings. Well, animals AREN'T lesser beings, they're just like us, so I say FUCK the Buddhists!"
--Bjork, 1997

"It's human nature to need a religious crutch and I don't begrudge anyone that. I just don't need one."
"Organized religions and their dogmas only serve to indoctrinate the participants into sheeplike common behaviors. This type of blind assimilation promotes the popularity of top-40 countdown radio stations and movie sequels. Skepticism towards groups, holy or otherwise is enriching and makes you a far more entertaining person."
