Winter Survival
Winter brings with it a whole new set of challenges, from blowing snow to ice covered lakes to shoveling snow. Winter storms can be accompanied by strong winds and can also be accompanied by heavy accumulations of ice. Extreme cold often accompanies winter storms. The following tips on winter preparedness can help you get safely through the winter months.
Winter Driving
Stay Back! Stay Alive!

During the winter months there are many crashes involving DOT snowplows. Most of these crashes could have been avoided if drivers would give the plow driver room to work safely. See Orange. Stay Back, Stay Alive.

Yield to snowplows. Do not pass. Remember, snowplows exit frequently. Slow down! Snowplows drive slower than posted speeds. NEVER drive into a snow cloud. Be patient. Follow 8 seconds behind snow plows.
Have an Emergency Car Kit
Keep an emergency supplies kit in your car.
  • A three pound coffee can, candles, matches, cup
  • Red bandana and plastic whistle
  • Pencil and paper, change for phone
  • First aid kit, essential medications
  • Flashlight and spare batteries
  • Large plastic garbage bag, safety pins
  • Bottled water and snack food
  • Blankets, warm boots and clothing
  • Safety flares, shovel, bag of sand
It can happen to you. Be Prepared!
