Disasters can
strike quickly and without warning. You and your family can
be forced to evacuate your neighborhood or you may be confined
to your home. Families can cope with disasters by preparing
in advance and working as a team. Make yourself an Emergency
Checklist and keep the following in mind:
Disasters can strike when no one is at
home.You're at work, the kids are
at school, soneone else is on the road between meetings. You
need to know how to find each other.
Establish a meeting place
near your home and one outside of your neighborhood.
Discuss how to escape from
your home.You should identify two
ways out of each room.
Learn first aid
and CPR. Contact your local Red Cross for class schedules.
Install smoke
detectors on every level of your home, especially near
bedrooms. Working smoke detectors increase the chances of surviving
a fire by 50 percent.
Teach family members how to use
an ABC type fire extinguishers and show them where it is kept.
Check your home
for fire hazards. There are many steps you can take to
reduce the risk of fire in your home. For exaple:
Keep matches, lighters and other combustibles
away from children.
Unplug electrical equipment when not in use.
Replaced frayed or crakced electrical wiring.
