Registering at WU

Registration at the WU is to allow the unviersity to recognise you as one of their students.  It is a matter of first obtaining the relevant information and paperwork to bring with you (mentioned below), turning up to Registration (which is usually the week before the semester starts) and waiting the required minimum of 4 days in order to pick up your student card.

At the beginning of each semester, there are usually information sessions (usually two) included in orientation week for incoming exchange students.  It is recommended you attend one of these sessions so that registering at WU is not made more difficult.

In this information session, one of the ZAS (Study Abroad Centre) representatives will take you through an information package in which many forms will have to be filled out in a certain way.  These documents are of course in German, so if your command of Deutch is a little rusty (or non-existant!), make sure you attend the session.

The session will also give some very valuable information on acquisition of results and the transfer of credits to your home university.

The first couple of days of registration week is VERY CROWDED, so if you are eager to get registration over with, be prepared to stand in line for up to 3 hours!!  Generally, you will require some of the documents from the information session, 2 stamps purchased at the Tobak, 2 passport pictures and your acceptance letter.  In addition, you semester fees have to be paid (at either the Tobak, or if you open a bank account at Creditanstalt, your fees will be paid by the bank).

Four days after lodgement, you will be able to pick up your student card from the same office.

Computer Labs

The computer labs are open throughout the semester from Monday to Thursday 8am to 9pm, Friday 8am to 6pm and Saturday 9am to 5pm.  It is usual to wait for a computer after 10.30am throughout the semester and as the semester progresses, inevitably the labs become very busy.

Through semester breaks the lab opens Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm and closes on weekends.

Under your computer registration, you have 50 free pages of printing for the semester.  If you need to purchase more, go to the 'Byte Bar' where, for ATS100 you may purchase another 50 pages.

To hire a laptop (notebook) for a class or paper, head to the Power Store on Level 1 at the D block of the main building.  The Power Store opens on Monday and Friday from 10am to 4pm and on Wednesday 10am to 4pm and 4pm to 6pm.  Hiring costs between 100-150ATS for 2days/weekend and 200-300ATS for 1 week.

Registration for Computer Access

After you have received your student number, you can obtain your log-in username and password for computer access at WU.  The only slight difficulty is you have to get on the computer in order to actually register.  If you do not have access you can ask a tutor to temporarily log-in on your behalf.

Go to the WU homepage and take the following steps (from the english version):

1.    Student Services
2.    PowerNet Support (Registration)
3.    Einrichtung eines PowerNet Accounts
4.    Fill out your Matrikelnummer (Student Number), Vorname (First
       Name), Nachname (Surname).
5.    Click Kennung Einrichten

The next screen will then indicate the process to be complete.  You may then go to the 'Byte Bar' (to the left of the Ground Floor doors heading out to the Mensa) to pick up your username and password.

Enrolling for classes

There is not a standard enrolment process for the English classes at WU.  It is therefore dependant on what subject you would like to take.  At the information session, a course outline booklet will be supplied with all the English subjects offered and enrolment specifications are noted.

Some will be a matter of writing your name on a list held at the ZAS or registering over the internet.  Others may require you to find the particular institute or mearly turn up to the first class.

Be prepared.  Classes may differ dramatically from your home university in the sence of structure.  Many classes are held in block format for a total of 3 to 5 days from 5 to 7.5 hours per day.

To obtain your library card, go to the library with a passport picture, fill out an application and pick up your card the following day.
