Health Mela to be organised October end

Aizawl Sept 25 : The date for the Health Mela to be held in the city has been fixed for end-October from 22 to 26, 2002.

The Health Mela or festival is to organised with funds from the Central Health ministry with the organisational work taken up by the Mizoram Health and Family Welfare department.

40 stalls will be constructed which will be manned by different specialist doctors where the public can have a physical check-up free of cost.

The Mizoram Health department will also try to dispense medicines and free investigations as far as practible and subject to the availability of funds.

Health counselling and awareness will be imparted during the festival. Apart from medical experts, the Union Health Minister, Shatrugan Sinha, is expected at the Mela.

Speaker hands out computer certicates to LA staff

Aizawl Sept 25 : The Mizoram Legislative Assembly Speaker R Lalawia, who attended the valedictory function of the 1st Computer Training Programme of Legislative Assembly Secretariat at the CEDTI, handed over the certificates to twelve trainees from the Secretariat.

In a speech, the Speaker said the Assembly Secretariat will be computerised as a result of which the first batch of trainees from the Secretariat had been enrolled in the programme. A second batch, comprising of another twelve persons from the Secretariat staff, will also be sent to undergo this training, the Speaker said.

Talking of his recent trip to Namibia to attend the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association conference, R Lalawia said he was among three of the speakers which could attend this conference from India and that he was most fortunate to have been able to attend such two meetings now.

The Indian High Commissioner in Namibia, Laldingliana, a Mizo, had received high praises from the delgates of this conference, the speaker said.

�All 72 delegates of this conference from all over the globe were most vocal in their praise of the Inidan High Commissioner in Namibia, Laldingliana, A Mizo just like us. �Among all Indian Ambassadors/High Commissioners, Laldingliana is the most able of the lot� was a common refrain from the delegates,� R Lalawia said.

First MSSC general body meeting held

Aizawl Sept 25 : The first general body meeting of the Mizoram State Sports Council was held today at the I & PR Conference Hall where the President and Sports Minister Rualchhina welcomed the new members.

In his welcome speech, the sports minister said "With the passing of the Mizoram State Sports Council Bill, the Council now will function under the rules and regulations that have been laid down in the MSS Council Act. Since this is all new to us, we must take utmost care in our action and study carefully all the rules in the Council Act.�

The MSSC general body today passed that elections of the Vice-President and Joint Secretary be held on October 11, 2002.

The general body today passed the demands of funds by various sports associations for promotional purposes submitted to the Council. The meeting also nominated seven additonal Executive Members to the Council.

Of the 30 members in the general body, 27 attended this first ever meeting of the MCCS today.

Cable TV operators to broadcast Star World

Aizawl Sept 25 : A meeting between the Cable TV oprators and the Consumers Union today ended with cable operators agreeing to broadcast an additional channelm namely, Star World while raising the monthly fees to Rs 200 for the cable connection. This agreement will be reviewed after three months. A problem arose while discussing the rural areas where there are cable TV operators. An agreement was reached whereby Rs 150 a month will be charged where there are 70 to 100 consumers, Rs 170 where there are 101-200 consumers and Rs 190 where there are 201 to 300 consumers. More pay channels will be broadcast where the monthly fees are more.

MPCY with PHE workers over non-payment of wages

Aizawl Sept 25: With the PHE department muster roll and workcharge employees poised to go on strike, the Mizoram People�s Conference party youths have critised the government for its non-payment of wages to these workers from August of last year.

Condemning the MNF ministry�s dissolution of the MPC-MNF combine government in 1999, the MPCY accused the government of being dictatorial and of spending the public�s money for other purposes.

"It is our strong belief that the unrestrained spending of money for other purposes and the favouring of party workers has placed the state finances in hot water resulting in the non-payment of wages of these workers.

"We demand that the government pay these workers, who rely solely on their pay, their proper wages as early as possible,� the MPCY said in a press release.

MISA voice their grievances

Aizawl Sept 25 : The Mizoram Industries Service Association have voiced their greivances against the government for which talks are going on.

According to activists of the association, the MISA is unhappy over the creation of the post of a deputy secretary for the IT wing in the Industries department which has replaced the post of joint director in the department. This, according to the MISA, has made it difficult for the government to fill up the posts of General Manager at Lunglei and Saiha.

Voicing other points of their grievances, the MISA said they want the government to immediately fill-up posts which are feeder posts for promotions and to regularise long overdue employees in the Industries department, some of whom have put in more than ten years of service.

AR given 99 year lease for Zokhawsang

Aizawl Sept 25 : The Cabinet meeting of September 24 agreed to lease the land at Zokhawsang where the Assam Rifles are to be moved for 99 years.

The Mizoram government have for many years tried to get the Assam Rifles, who have occupied the central area of the city and Khatla area, rehabitated outside the city for a variety of reasons. However, since the land which is occupied by them was theirs from the time when Aizawl was a fort, known as Fort Aijal during the British period, the government of Mizoram had faced many difficulties in the process needed for their rehabitation.

The Cabinet meeting of Tuesday also agreed that documents and line of action needed to be taken for the separation of judiciary from executive be reviewed and drafted by the Department of Personnel & Administrative Reforms.

Governor Kohli lays foundation stone for Vety College Halls

Aizawl Sept 25 : The Mizoram Mizoram governor A R Kohli today laid the foundation stone for the lecture halls of the College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry at the Central Agriculture Univeristy complex at Selesih.

The governor urged the students in this college to be of service to others and not to treat their studies as only a way of broadening their knowledge.

The lecture hall block that is to be constructed will have 6 halls and 3 utility rooms and will be constructed at a cost of Rs 278.93 lakhs.

The CAU has 17 departments with 27 professors and 83 students.
