Gov't gives EPIC training to election officials

Aizawl Sept 24 : In the ongoing preparation for the issuance of Elector Photo Identity Card (EPIC) to the state's electorate, the Mizoram government today imparted a training in this regard to election officials at the I & PR conference hall.

Chief Secretary HV Lalringa, who also attended this training told the officials that they must remember at all times that they are the representatives of the Election Commission of India as a result of which they are responisble to the Commission.

"The untarnished image the state has shown in past elections must continue," Lalringa said.

The chief secretary urged the officials to give results better than other states in the use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) and EPIC and to live upto the image that the state has as the second highest literate state in the country.

The training today was chaired by Lalmalsawma, IAS, Chief Electoral Officer and training imparted by experts from the state-appointed State Level Agency, CMC, Kolkata.

The training today was given to all district deputy commissioners and election officers. Other election officials and staff from Zenics will be given training on Wednesday.

MIHETSU not to be responsible for wrong diagnosis

Aizawl Sept 24 : The Mizoram Health Technical Staff Union (MIHETSU) who commenced on an indefinite strike today said they will not be held responsible for any wrong diagnosis resulting from employment of unqualified personnel.

The MIHETSU said reports reaching them on the first day of their indefinite strike said the government was employing unqualified IV Grade staff in some instances which could result in wrong diagnosis.

"In case of wrong diagnosis as a result of the employment of unqualified staff, the MIHETSU members will in no way take responsiblitity," a press release of this organisation said.

The MIHETSU, who had gone on a strike earlier in the year, has begun an indefinte strike again as their grievances on their pay and services had not been redressed by the government as promised.

"Until and unless our grievances are redressed, we shall go on an indefinite strike. However, in order that the suffering of the public is not prolonged, we pray the government would take notice of our demands," the press release said.

AR to place fresh Assam Rifles Bn in Mizoram

Aizawl Sept 24 : Lt Gen J S Verma, GOC-in-C, Eastern Command today told Mizoram Chief Minister that a fresh battalion of Assam Rifles will be placed in the state.

In a meeting with chief minister Zoramthanga, General Verma assured the CM that more youths from the state would be given preference for the armed forces. He in turn requested land for placing more Assam Rifles battalions in the state.

At their meeting, the chief minister and the general both agreed to work together in securing lasting peace in the state and and the northeast region.

Praising Zoramthanga for his efforts in making the state the most peaceful in the region and for taking up development works at a fast pace, General Verma requested the chief minister to remain the leading light for peace in the neihbouring states and the region.

Ex-MNA Assn criticise separate martyrs' day function

Aizawl Sept 24 : The Ex-MNA Association has criticised the PAMRA for holding a separate Myrtar's Day function at Beraw Tlang saying they could have joined in the function organised by the government.

"It is regrettable that while the people of Mizoram agreeably and seriously commemorated those who had given their lives for the land, some members of the PAMRA had chosen to hold a separate function in this regard. We hereby invite them to to join us in one mind to fulfill the task left to us by our martyrs," a press release of the Ex-MNA organisation said.

Expressing their satisfaction that a martyr's cemetary had been constructed for those who had given their lives for Mizoram, the Ex-MNA Association, taking a dig at the Congress, said they do not recognise any cemetary which had been built by others without receiving a consensus from the people of Mizoram.

SMSF given warning by Lunglei DC

Aizawl Sept 24 : Meeting leaders of the newly formed Southern Mizoram Students Federation in Lunglei, Lucy Lalrinthari, who is taking the Deputy Commissioner's charge, warned the Federation that any intention of the organisation in taking up the ILP issues would be in contravention to the law.

The Federation leaders, who said they were not recognised by the government nor were they a registered organisation, promised not do to anything illegal after they were informed that checking of ILPs were prerogative of the government and that they would be in the wrong if they pressed on with their intentions.

The SMSF told the Lunglei district authorities that they had formed this organisation to safeguard and reform the failing political situation and the deteriorating economic, education and social status that is found in the state in the present times.

Gov't chalks out Cleanliness Week prog

Aizawl Sept 24 : The Mizoram government has chalked out a programme for the Cleanliness Week which will be observed on the occassion of the Gandhi Jayanti from October 2 to October 8, 2002.

During the week, cleanliness drive will be made through the media, both printed and electronic as well as a public education drive through the electronic media.

The government has requested the public to pack any rubbish that is to be picked up by the LAD sanitation squad and to keep their dwellings and compounds clean.

A competition on cleanliness will be held on government offices and localities in the city as well as an essay competition on cleanliness.

Cabinet creates 19 new VCs

Aizawl Sept 24 : A Cabinet Meeting held today at the Chief Minister's residence today passed the creation of 19 new Village Council/Courts before the coming VC elections.

While 19 new VCs will be created, one will be abolished.

The new VCs to be created are Selesih, Bungkawn Vengthar, Muanna Veng, Tuirial, Bawngkawn Chhimveng, Zokhawthar, Sunhluchhip, New Ngharchhip, Mautlang and Kani. Additional VCs have been created as follows - 3 in Serchhip, 1 each in Mamit, Baktawng, Champhai, Kawnpui and Vairengte.

Abolishing the new Chalrang VC, the people of this locality will now be included in the Khawhai VC area.

With these new creations, the number of VCs will now rise to 522 from 504.
