MPC-ZNP plays safe

Aizawl, Oct 19: The Mizoram Peoples Conference (MPC) and the Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP) combine are to officially announce their seat sharing agreement at the Press Club on Monday Oct 20 2003.

The MPC-ZNP combine has decided to play it safe by making the constituencies from where the incumbent chief minister Zoramthanga and the ex-CM Lal Thanhawla are expected to contest as common zones. Chief Minister Zoramthanga is expected to contest from Champhai and Kolasib while Lal Thanhawla is tipped to contest from his home constituency Serchhip even though he lost the seat in the last elections.

The MPC-ZNP combine has decided to share the twenty seats to be declared as 'common zone' on a fifty-fifty basis with 10 seats going to each party. The remaining twenty seats will be the 'free zone' where the Mizoram Peoples Conference and the Zoram Nationalist Party will each put up their individual candidates.

The combines chief ministerial candidate Lalfak Zuala, a retired bureaucrat with no grass root support base, is expected to contest from Aizawl West I which is a MPC stronghold and therefore considered a safe seat.

The MPC chief Lalhmingthanga will in all probability choose Lunglei South I and one other constituenct. The ZNP president is also playing it safe and intends to fight from two constituencies.

MCU takes up the cudgel

Aizawl, Oct 19: The Mizoram Consumers Union (MCU) has woken up at last and has decided to take strong measures to protect the rights of the consumers.

A list of resolutions were passed during the 7th Annual General Meeting of the Mizoram Consumers Union held at the Co-operative Hall at Babutlang on the 16th Oct. 2003.

Among the resolutions passed were ones concerning the electricity, water, telephones, gas and the PDS.

The meeting also demanded the proper functioning of Redressal Agencies and that the Aizawl District Forum President should not be an additional charge but a full time functionary.

Speaking to 'Newslink' the MCU Gen. Secy. has commented that the telephone department (BSNL) were the biggest defaulter. And that even though the MCU has met with the BSNL authorities a number of times the response has always been evasive and/or hollow.

The MCU has asked the BSNL to initiative a facilitation counter to alleviate the problems of its subscribers, where the customers would not have to run from pillar to post to have there grievances attended to. The MCU also demanded the proper functioning of telephone exchanges in rural areas and to address the recurring problem of faulty billing. "The BSNL is taking the public for a ride, the staff are rude and untrained and even the statutory telephone directory is not made available to the telephone subscribers," he added.

The last telephone directory was prepared in the year 2000. The new telephone directory slated for release in June 2002 is still to see the light of day. The BSNL authorities have no comment other than that the order has been given to a Kolkata based printing firm in April 2003 and that the new telephone directory will be available 'soon'.

The MCU has proposed to take strong remedial action to get the consumers their rights.

The MCU Annual General Meeting also elected new office bearer for 2003-2006. President:Bualhranga Vice President: 1. P.Lalupa 2. V.L.Rawna 3. Lalhuliana Sailo General Secretary: Thanglura Treasurer: Lalthlahlova Sailo
