Durga puja celebrated in the city
Aizawl Oct 14 : The Hindu community of state celebrated the Durga puja today with the Assam Rifles slaughtering a water buffalo in a symbolic ritual to receive strength from the goddess Durga.
Durga puja has been celebrated since the Assam Rifles first came to Mizoram and most of the permanent Mizos in the city, who had been here before the disturbance of 1966, are familiar with the rituals.
However, the festivities of Durga puja have been toned down in recent times which could be in deference to the state's religion of Christianity resulting in the new generation's lack of knowledge about this puja.
Local Hindu communities in the city usually have their own image of the goddess which is worshipped during the pujas. At the end of the festivities, the image is immersed in a suitable body of water to complete the festivities.
While most of the images will be immersed tomorrow, some communities within the state will have the immersion ceremony on Wednesday.
The Durga puja festivities commenced in the state on Saturday and will conclude on Tuesday.
The Mizoram government have announced Monday and Tuesday as holidays.
