Police launch search for suspected HPC (D) personnel
Aizawl Oct 07:The Mizoram police have launched a n operation to ferret out suspected HPC (D) personnel believed to have made demands of huge sums of money to government employees in the Sinlung Hills Devlopment Area in the northeastern part of the state.
The Mizoram police received reports of HPC (D) activities Friday last when it was learned suspected HPC (D) personnel, carrying arms, were distributing letters in the Hmar language demanding money from government employees as well as from the Vaitin and Sakawrdai VC members.
Aizawl district SP Zorammawia, when contacted today, said these suspected HPC (D) personnel had demanded 10% of their salaries from government employees.
"When the police received reports of the HPC (D) activities in the SHDC area, 2 platoons of MAP were immediately despatched to mount a search operation under the Aizawl district Additional SP Lalremmuana," Zorammawia said.
"We believe these suspected HPC (D) personnel to have already crossed over to the Manipur said. More armed police will sent as the necessity arises," Zorammawia added.
The Hmar People's Convention (Democrat) is a splinter group of the Hmar movement, HPC, who took up arms in demand of an autonomous district in the early 1990s.
After several years of armed conflict with the Mizoram government, the HPC and the Mizoram government, then under Lalthan Hawla, signed an MoU on September 30, 1994.
Not agreeing to the MoU, the HPC (D) have carried on its armed agitation against the Mizoram government and other neighbouring governments. According to themselves, the HPC (D) numbers around 200.
However, the Mizoram police are skeptical of this figure which they think is exaggerated. The probable number accoring to the police is around 50 or 60.
The HPC (D) have been involved in several kidnappings inside and outside the state in the recent past.
MNF youths refutes Agri deptt bifurcation
Aizawl Oct 07: The Mizoram State AIDS Control Society today organised another AIDS awareness training at the Aizawl Civil Hospital auditorium, this time to Village Council members.
The Mizo National Youth Front today refuted the charges made by Vanglaini, a local vernacular paper over the bifurcation of the Agriculture department saying the government had initated a much needed move by this bifurcation.
Likening the Agriculture department to an old ramshackle building that is on the verge of collapsing, the MNF youths said if not for a minister who is adept in looking after the department, the Agriculture department would have fallen down a long time ago.
Making a case out of R Thansanga, the MNYF said he was but waiting out his retirement time at the Agriculture directorate, living a loose moral life and bereft of new ideas to take the department to new pastures.
"The shifting of R Thansanga to the secretariat in a more important job was done in hope of giving incentives to his underlings in the Agriculture department. Since the High Court had ordered that he be repatriated to his old post through his petition and since a director already is in place at the department, the best thing to do was to bifurcate the department as had been done in the PWD and Health department," the MNYF said in a press release.
