Pay-as-you-go Toilet / Valentine's Celebration: Aioli Bodega Española

Sunday, February 17, 2008

Toilets work pretty simply. You do what you need to do, you flush, and it all goes away. Well, Pam's toilet has a surprise: it pays as you go. Actually, it pays after you flush. Every once in a while, after flushing, we'll hear a light metallic clinking. When we look in towards the large hole in the bottom, we find money. Granted, it's Mexican money, but we get paid either way.

Three are dual-metal construction with a ring of copper around a silver-colored disc in the middle. One appears to be worth "N $20", which must be 20 pesos (nuevo pesos; apparently after the revaluation). The other at home here is 50 centavos and all copper. The other two are at Pam's and are dual-metal construction.

Pam and I went to Aioli Bodega Española for our Valentine's dinner yesterday. Overall, we enjoyed it. Pam had the pato al porto y aceitunas, while I ordered the bisteca costeña. We both rather enjoyed our dishes. Pam received nearly 1/3-1/2 a duck with some potatoes and a yummy spinach concoction. The duck tasted really good, but it may have been a little dry; I don't know if that's normal for duck. My steak, a perfect medium rare, gushed with wonderful flavor. I received the same seasoned spinach as Pam but had some potatoes au gratin neatly placed in a square on my plate. Despite the seemingly long wait for our main course (around 1.25h after being seated), the food was worth it. Pam ordered their sangria, a well-balanced fruity blend. For dessert, Pam ordered the crema catalan con naranja. It looked like a really yummy orange creme brulee, and it had what I detected to be an odd, yet pleasant, honeysuckle flavor. I ordered the sopa de chocolate, described as "chocolate truffles in a white chocolate soup." Sadly, it barely resembled the description. What I received looked more like three chocolate truffles with some white chocolate melted and poured on the plate. Not really a soup, but it tasted wonderful. They were some of the best tasting truffles I've had in a long time.

Overall, we had a great time. Do not go there in a hurry, for you will be disappointed and frustrated. But, if you want to enjoy great food in a relaxed atmosphere where wait staff isn't trying to get you out as fast as possible, then you'll love it.
