Random Thoughts

Tuesday, April 22, 2008

Some thoughts from the past month:

- My high school economics teacher once told us, "I work because I enjoy not working." I don't remember what he intended that statement to instill in us during those formidable years, but, to me, the work I do makes the times I don't work all that more desirable. And boy did I enjoy my vacation. A short trip to Calaveras Big Trees State Park gave me a nice retreat for one day. The only minor downside was the 3 feet of snow on the ground. Fortunately me and my big feet navigated the park's trails and had a great time. A little swim on the river and lots of game-playing filled out most of that week.

- With various things going on lately, I got my taxes in later than usual. I still had them figured out a couple of months in advance, but I didn't get them inked up until a week or two before they were due. Now I just sit and wait for my refund and stimulus package to arrive. I have the total amount evenly split up, but I'm not sure about the frivolous expenditure. Should I get a digital camera like I've wanted for some time? Do I go the "fine art reprint" route? Or maybe some sort of DVD player or such? Too many choices. We'll see what looks like the better choice when I actually have the dinero.

- I wondered for a long time why my friend's page didn't get any RSS feeds from my site. While tinkering with Gmail and its RSS capabilities, I found that my site doesn't have a feed. I may fix that. A couple of web sites should help me. It looks rather easy in theory.

- I've been in a big Guns N' Roses kick lately. I find myself there on occasion. A new t-shirt should be on its way (the classic bullet logo). Deezer.com has a few rare tracks. I'm really digging that site; it's almost like YouTube but for audio-only. No more crappy "videos" for the songs people post. If I had a few extra hundred dollars, I'd bid on the copies of "Live ?!*@ Like a Suicide" and the EP on eBay and other sources. Alas, I may have to scour local shops for bootlegs to quench my thirst.

- I'm still watching this season's American Idol, but I'm making it my last. A few years ago, I got some kick out of it just from my general enjoyment of music. Primarily, I liked singing along with whatever songs I knew. But now it's just getting a bit lame, childish, and simply just not really my music realm. Isn't there some other band out there who wants to hold a lottery for a new lead singer?

- Speaking of bands needing lead singers: although I had been waiting for the "April Fools", I say "good riddance" to Weiland. Velvet Revolver was too "Stone Temple Pilots" for too many songs. Don't get me wrong, though. I did like some tracks from VR's first album. However, after hearing their second album online, I'm a bit hesitant to buy it. I probably will eventually. But since, outside of "Core", STP never did it for me, I look forward to a necessary change for VR.

Coming up soon: Brain dump about music fanaticism.
