Better Complexion through Alcohol / Housewarming-Birthday Party / Meal Idea Backlogs / Reading Plans

Tuesday, January 31, 2006

I haven't had the need to use or think about acne medications in a long time.  Middle school might have been the last time I shopped for anything along those lines.  By the time high school came along, either I gave up on the fight or I didn't see any point in doing anything about it. (Attending an all-male high school probably facilitated the latter.)

Recently, I heard an ad on the radio.  Initially, I thought the rather young individual said, "I tried everything to clear up my acne.  Then I tried everclear, and I haven't had a problem since!"

"What?  Commercials encouraging underage people to drink their acne away?" was my initial thought.  Then, after listening more carefully, I realized that the name of the product sounds a lot like "everclear" with as fast as the kids said it.

A funny thought, and I doubt I was the only one who heard it like this at first.

In this past month, I held my housewarming party.  In reality, it was a cover for what ended up being a low-key birthday party for myself and the first party I ever hosted in my own place.

I had one minor, slight detail that created a solvable problem: my apartment was a mess.  It wasn't just a state of not having a flat area cleaned off but having boxes of stuff all over the place.  A few days of cleaning and organizing helped that out wonderfully.

We chatted for some time and played games.  We played "Mystery Mansion", a game where you search rooms for clues and treasure, building the mansion as you play.  I won that one with some luck.  When more of the crew arrived, we played "Life".  Tim decided to take the long-shot plan and made it work.  He went through the Business path, opted to not buy any of the insurance except the Stock and maybe the Life Insurance.  Tim was first across the toll bridge and first to determine his fate at the end.  Knowing he didn't have enough to become a millionaire by sheer cash alone, Tim put all of his stuff on one number, spun, got that number, and won the game.  I don't think I've ever seen such luck before, and I doubt I will again.

We did make one excursion out for some coffee and dinner at Hamburger Mary's.  Outside of vodka, kahlua, beer, and Diet Mountain Dew, the only other thing we had to eat/drink was cheesecake and cherries from Trader Joe's.  This was Pam's addition to the party to make it more of a birthday thing for me.

Besides some beer and the use of their traveling liquor cabinet, they gave me a bottle of Hangar One Buddha-Hand Vodka and a bottle of Chandon champagne.  I've been tempted to check out Chandon, and the vodka has been a good sipping vodka to have with some meals (it makes a good mixer, though I have yet to see a recipe that sounds good and isn't too complex).

I rather had fun having people over.  I may do it again at some point.  Hopefully, next time, I'll remember to put out the salsa and chips, rather than forgetting about them until after everyone left.

One of the greatest challenges with living alone is thinking up meal ideas every week.  My breakfasts are easy: I love cold cereal and have preferred it for breakfast since I was a kid.  My problem focuses more on lunch and dinner.

I cook my own meals, so that, alone, makes planning meals more difficult.  Part of my weight-loss plan included making lunch my biggest meal, but that caused me to try to flip-flop the traditional sense of what entails "lunch" and "dinner".  That didn't work very well.  Now, I'm back to more traditional meals and trying to make my dinners smaller while adding a bit more to my lunches.

Recipes may help me out here.  I don't require much in a way of variety during the week, but I do like some variance between weeks.  I have tons stockpiled somewhere around here, so it may be worth browsing through to see if I saved anything that may be helpful.

The backlog of newspapers kept me from reading anything but them in the past few weeks.  Now that I'm caught up, I can think about reading something else.  I am currently in the middle of "Prince Caspian", the second book of the Chronicles of Narnia.  I re-introduced myself to "The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe" and, afterwards, enjoyed the movie adaptation.  My enjoyment of the former led me to continue reading.

I don't know what else I'll read, though a Tolkien romp may be in order.  I have nice editions of The Silmarillion and The Lord of the Rings, and both are motivators to re-read both (or, in the case of the former, try to make it through the whole thing).  I have the Hitchhiker's Guide series to which I've added a couple of books to the first two that I already had.  I also haven't re-read "To Kill a Mockingbird".
