Hanging and Eating out

Kathmandu has changed the last decades and it's not presumptuous to say that its face will go on changing more rapidly the next years. Everybody who knows the town and has watched the change the last few years will agree. But it's not the way that the average living conditions of the people improved the same way. It's just that the town and the whole country have arranged with the needs of the masses of tourists coming each year and so to attract more and more of them. The most rapid changes are to observe in those parts of the city were there are the most tourists. Today this is definitely Thamel. Just take a look into the grocery stores and you'll nearly find everything you already know from your home country. Or notice the changes that the latest cyber generation brought with. You'll find internet access almost everywhere. And the prices are really affordable. We don't think that this is just for its best, but it's the price you have to pay if you will get and keep attractive. Surely, there are also positive effects due to this development. E.g. the standards of hygiene improved extremely during the last few years, which is important when you decide for eating out.

In fact, Kathmandu offers a tremendous variety of cuisines. Some restaurants in Kathmandu offer live entertainment, others have charming gardens or rooftop venues with breathtaking views to the nearby mountains. In Kathmandu almost every type of cuisine is available just like Thai, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Nepalese and continental. So, it's just up to your choice were to go for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The most unique restaurants, bars and cafes are surely located in downtown Kathmandu better known as Thamel, the meeting point of trekkers and tourists all around the world and for this also the melting pot of cultures.

It's not up to us giving advice where to go and why and, of course, we had our preferences, but nevertheless, everybody should make his/her own experience.

The bars we liked most were "Les Yeux" and "Cinderella" and this not only by chance. We chose those locations due to a band of young Nepali musicians, who named themselves GENIUS. They really played genial classic rock songs. So if you ever get there take your time and have a look onto those rooftop gardens. We've heard they're still playing there.
