I've been told I have a good reason for starting smoking. I was a server at Friendly's, and it wasn't the best managed place. I frequently ran into nights where I was the only server, or was working with one other person. We had to get drinks, take orders, deliver orders, make salads, all the normal server stuff. We also had to play the part of host, busser, AND we had to make everyone's ice cream. All added together made for very busy, hectic Friday and Saturday nights. If I just sat down for a minute, the manager would tell me to get back to work. Those smoking did not have to deal with this. So, I put two and two together, and started smoking.

I kept smoking after I started smoking weed, because (I don't know if it works or not) I wanted to cover up the smell of the weed. Since then, I've just never had the motivation to quit. I like smoking, it helps keep me calm and affable. Trust me, you don't want to be around me if I haven't smoked in a few hours. Grouchy, irritable, sometimes mean.

That said, smoking is a nasty thing. My main problem with it is the cost. A pack of smokes here in Virginia runs about 2.50-4 bucks a pack, depending where you buy 'em. The other effects of smoking seem distant and not too much of a problem, since I can quit at any time....tongue planted firmly in cheek there. I have trouble getting motivated to do things I like to do, going without the nicotine is not something I want to do, this makes even starting to quit much harder.

If you want to piss off a smoker, start spouting statistics. The one we like best is the 8-11 minutes off your life for every cigarette you smoke. Here's a stat for you: People that quote statistics are likely to end up with a fist on their nose in the next 8-11 seconds. Leave us alone. Especially when we're outside on a 20 degree day. We're not hurting you; the second you have to breathe the second-hand-smoke isn't gonna kill you. We suffer enough. And I don't want to hear about your grandmother either. LEAVE ME ALONE!! Your trifling comments are not gonna make me drop the smoke, say "What am I doing!!" and quit. We know damn well what we're doing, and we don't care.
