Making a Spider
Well, after searching the internet for spider designs that I could possably build, I came up with this spider. It can be adapted many ways and be made from just about any materials you can get easily. I had to buy a pipe cap, The rest of the parts came from scrap stuff I picked up or had laying around. I think the center hub could be made from hardwood such as a large piece of dowl rod.
The First step is to accurately divide and mark the Hub. I used a ruler to divide it into 3 equal sections. This was marked for 3 vanes. It was alot of trial and error but spend the time to get the lines straight
The first 3 cuts are at the 3 vane positions The cuts are made with a hacksaw and they are 1/4"deep
The second 3 cuts are 1/8" to the right of the first 3 cuts, for all 3 vanes and are 1/4" deep also
This is what the hub looks like after the second set of cuts.
This is the final set of cuts to the hub. if all goes well, it should look like this .
This is how I lay out my vanes. I then cut them out with tinsnips. You will have to figure out what size vanes you need.
Here I am drilling the vane pin holes in the hub. I used cut off nails for pins.
I drill a 1/4" hole through the hub
The last 3 cuts are optional They lighten the spider and alow for easyer pinning of the vanes
The ends of the vane are brass 1/4x 1-1/4" bolts with the hex sawed off, then split 1/4"deep with a hacksaw.

This is the finished hub with one vane pinned on. It is hard to see but there is a pin in the 1/4" brass bolt also, to hold it to the vane.
