| so every now and then, i contemplate becoming a vegitarian. I used to think that sympathy for the animals was a silly reason to be a vegitarian (sidenote: there are a ton of different reasons to become a vegitarian,) (another side note: whenever i ask vegitarians why they became vegitarians, they always give me lame reasons that seem more like excuses than anything else. things like "i don't like the taste of it") anyway, now i think animal sympathy is a very good reason, because, as a species we've evolved to the point where we don't need to eat meat to stay healthy, and we can simply create a more humane society by not raising animals simply to be eaten. Another good reason, in my mind, for becoming a vegitarian, is because it takes a lot of food to feed the animals to raise them to eat. So, if everyone in the world was vegitarian, we wouldn't use so much grain and such feeding animals, and therefore we'd have such a surplus that ending world hunger would be quite possible. Although there are three opposing arguements that i must deal with, 1. It's socially acceptable, and almost expected to eat meat. This really doesn't bother me, i've never really cared what people think of me, i never really try to fit in. But, it does mean that it's easy to find places to eat good meat, and it's hard to find places to eat good vegitarian meals. It also makes it hard to find a place to eat when your friends aren't vegitarians. 2. We can. This is simple. Although it takes a lot of vegitables to feed animals to make a little meat, we can do it, and it's still cheap. We are wealthy enough to eat all kinds of meat all the time. 3. This is the hardest one for me. I like the taste of it. It's really hard to give up something that you've had all your life and that you really like. |
