Laws of Life Essay
Editor’s Note: Due to the tragedy that struck CHS, my column will not run this
month, but will be back next issue. I wanted to take this space to remember Ryan Boslet,
who was a shining example of a student athlete whose parent’s support made it possible to
do the things he loved. The following is his Laws of Life essay which may serve as a thank-you to all of our parents .
My parents inspired me to play sports when I was five years old. My first sport my
father signed me up for was soccer. I wasn’t too fond of it at first, but my parents told me
to keep at it and I would begin to like it. They were right, I did like it after all. I also
played tennis for a little while when I was six years old. My dad loves baseball and was
really anxious to introduce me to the sport. As soon as I started, I loved it. I played fall and spring baseball until I was in the seventh grade.
Whenever I had a bad season in baseball, my parents always reminded me to keep at
it and not give up. They told me that everyone gets into a slump, even the major leaguers.
Sure enough, they were right. The very next season I did a whole lot better. I even hit my first homerun that year.
When I had a good year, my parents told me to never get too cocky. In seventh
grade, my mom told me that I was finally big and old enough to start football. My dad
helped me a lot during the beginning of the football season. He taught me the bascis and helped me through the tough times. My parents have always helped me build the
confidence I need to succeed. During my second year in football, when I was in eighth grade, I tackled the
quarterback in one memorable play. In doing so, I hyperextended my leg and could hardly
walk on it. The coaches and my parents rushed onto the field to see what had happened.
My dad and a coach helped me get off the field. They put a lot of ice on my knee and
wrapped it up really tight. My mom also gave me some Advil to relieve the pain. When it
was halftime I tried walking on it a little. It still hurt pretty bad, so I waited until midway
through the third quarter to walk around again. By then the Advil had kicked in and I
wanted to go back in. My mom didn’t want me to go back in and injure it again. My dad
told me that it was my choice and that he couldn’t make that decision for me. I decided to
go back in and give it a shot. It just so happened that I tackled the quarterback for a safety. My parents signed me up for physical therapy and helped me to fix my knee.
I tore ligaments in my ankle during a football game my second year on Varsity. My
parents came down to see how I was and this time I couldn’t walk at all. I took my mom’s advice and didn’t go back into the game. My parents signed me up for physical therapy
again. It took longer this time but it healed better than it was originally.
Now my parents are really helping me get into a good college. They are researching
information and talking to people. My mom even said she could talk to some of her former
college friends that played for University of Georgia. We are really hoping that I get a
scholarship for football because that is what I want to do in college. I know my parents are going to help me even in college, whether or not I play football.
So as you can see, my parents have been very supportive throughout my life. Without
my parents, I wouldn’t be who I am today. I really appreciate what my parents have done for me.
