SYNOPSIS
-
The group are finally seniors this year, and the
one person having the hardest time accepting that fact is Willow. Oz and
Xander have to carry her off campus when she claims that she's not ready
and that she's afraid that they'll get into trouble, even though seniors
can leave campus at lunch. Buffy meets them across the street with a
picnic because she's still not allowed on campus. They all spot Scott
Hope, who Willow is trying to get Buffy interested in, so that she can
move on with her life.
Elsewhere in town, a limo pulls up with two occupants inside. One is a
vampire named Kakistos, who is so old that his hands and feet are
cloven. His associate is named Mr. Trick, who uses modern technology to
achieve his goals. They kill an employer at the local burger bar, and
vow to kill the Slayer.
Buffy and Angel dance at the Bronze, and as they dance, Buffy's Claddagh
ring falls to the floor. Angel picks it up and holds it tight in his
hand. Blood comes pouring from his fist, and then from his chest where
she stabbed him. When she tries to help him, he tells her to go to Hell.
Then, he changes into a dead corpse, laughs at her and tells her that he
went to Hell. Buffy wakes up from this dream and Joyce tells her it's
time to go and face Snyder. At school, Principal Snyder has been forced
to let Buffy back in and he gives her a huge list of things that she has
to do before everything will be final, including passing tests from all
of the classes that she missed last year.
Back in school, and back in the library, Buffy vaguely explains to Giles
what happened with Angel and Acathla at the mansion for a spell Giles
wants to do to keep Acathla dormant and then she goes off to take an
English make-up exam. Willow wants to help with the spell, but Giles
doesn't want her to, even though she's been conducting magic all summer
long without him knowing. At the Bronze that night, Buffy interrupts
some Willow and Oz bonding, and is then approached again by Scott, who
has been told by Willow that Buffy would be present. When Buffy tries to
avoid giving him an answer to his request to dance, he says he'll be
waiting by the dance floor if she changes her mind.
Xander and Cordelia join them and Cordelia brings up a pair dancing on
the floor. There's a very dated fashion sense on the guy, who ushers the
girl he's with outside. Buffy follows the couple and, on her way out,
encounters Scott again, who's mistaken her sudden leaving for a changed
mind. The Scooby Gang rush outside and Buffy finds out that the girl is
actually the new Slayer, Faith, who borrows Buffy's stake and kills the
vampire. Later, back in the Bronze, Faith tells stories of her slaying
which Xander finds very interesting. She tells them that her Watcher
went to a convention and she skipped out.
The next day at school, Giles complains, having not been invited to the
Watcher's Convention. Faith hits on Giles while Buffy first gags and
then catches up on the latest fatal activities around Sunnydale. While
Buffy goes to take a make-up exam, her friends take Faith on a tour of
the school where she later finds, and hits on Scott. At dinner that
night, Faith is over at Buffy's house explaining how she loves slaying.
Joyce makes a wild attempt to get Buffy to be more like her in her
slaying. While Faith chows down on all the food on the table, Joyce and
Buffy talk about Faith maybe taking over. Buffy accidentally lets it
slip that a Slayer can only be called when one dies.
Buffy and Faith slay that night and argue. When some vampires attack
them, Buffy ends up fighting two, while Faith pummels the other. Buffy
is pinned down by vampire who mentions Kakistos, and Faith doesn't help
her. She gets up by herself and stakes the vampires. Then she drags
Faith away and kills that vampire as well. The next day, Buffy tells
Giles her worried feelings about Faith and he goes to call her Watcher.
While Giles is gone, Scott finds Buffy again and asks her to a Buster
Keeton show. She agrees and he gives her a present - a Claddagh ring.
She freaks out and he takes off. Giles arrives just in time to see the
whole thing, and then tells Buffy that Faith's Watcher is dead.
That night, Buffy goes to talk to Faith who is trying to talk her way
out of paying the rent. Faith reveals that Kakistos killed her Watcher,
and now he's after her. Kakistos arrives at her door, and after some
screaming, the Slayers escape through the window and end up in an old
building. Faith admits that she saw what he did to her Watcher, and that
she tried to stop him, but ended up running. Then they find that they're
in Kakistos' hideout. Buffy fights some minions, while Faith is beat up
by Kakistos. Buffy breaks free and stakes Kakistos, only to find that he
can't be killed by the stake. Faith grabs a large beam of wood and
stakes him with that. He finally turns to dust and the girls go off to
get something to eat, being absolutely starved. They are unaware that
Trick has escaped.
At school, Giles tells Buffy that Faith is staying for a while and that
he'll train her until they can find her a new Watcher. Buffy finally
realizes that she has to come to terms with what happened with Angel and
she gives away all the details. After she leaves, Giles tells Willow,
who is still anxious to help with the spell, that there is no spell.
Buffy goes to find Scott and asks him if they can still go out. He
considers, briefly, and then they make plans for that night.
Before her date, Buffy goes to the mansion and she places her Claddagh
ring down on the ground. After she leaves, everything goes dark, and the
ring glows. Suddenly, a naked Angel falls down from the ceiling.
TRIVIA
-
Eliza Dushku makes her first appearance as
Faith in this episode. She makes 20 appearances on the show altogether,
as well as six appearances on Angel. She is like Buffy's shadow,
or alto-ego, as she is what Buffy could become if she had no family or
friends for support. Faith and Buffy have an uneasy relationship right
through until the end of the show. When asked about her character,
Dushku had this to say: "They originally didn't really see her as being
a character people would like or relate to. They kind of brought her in
to be just a bad character for a few shows. But I think we brought a
little sympathy to her, some innocence, so that you couldn't hate her."
-
K. Todd Freeman makes his first appearance
as Mr. Trick in this episode. He leaves the show in
Consequences, after just five
episodes.
-
Fab Filippo appears as Scott Hope for the
first time in this episode, and appears in the following two before
disappearing into obscurity.
CONTINUITY
-
When Kendra was murdered in
Becoming (Part 1), it activated the
next Slayer, Faith, who now, over three months later has turned up in
Sunnydale.
-
Snyder's agreement that Buffy needs to see
the school counsellor is followed up in
Beauty and the Beasts.
GOOFS
-
When Mr. Trick orders a soda, he is told it
is 89¢. He hands over a note (lowest denomination: $1), but receives no
change.
-
When Faith asks Buffy about her hardest
kill, Buffy is about to tell her about the Three, but in fact Buffy
didn't kill the Three.
-
When Buffy first stakes Kakistos, the stake
is left in his chest. But when Faith finally drives the beam through
him, the smaller stake is gone.
