Turbo Project

After getting the fever for wanting a Camaro I shopped around until I found one with a decent price, good color, in good shape, and with a 5-spd.  After driving it I instantly fell in love with it and having a fire sparked for performance upgrades from friends with faster cars than mine I began to dream of different modifications that I could do to it.

So far I have added:

Drivetrain:

a set of underdrive pulleys on the crankshaft and the alternator.  It seemed to a little, of course not much.

a homemade ram air system. It incorporates a scoop under the front on the car and a box with a K&N filter. This improved throttle response. Click here for pictures. **(removed after road debris removed the scoop!)

a Zexel Torsen posi-traction differential. I got this as a take off part from SLP and it makes a lot of difference.  The car holds the road much better and acceleration seems to have improved because of the increase in traction. I need to take the car to the track to see if my times have improved any. You can also make both of the rear wheels spin during burn-out instead of just the one with the standard differential.  Click here to see pictures of the installation.

A one piece driveshaft my friend gave me from his 91 Trans Am GTA that he put a 383 into.  I just wanted the added strength and reduced weight as compared to the stock two piece unit.

A centerforce dual friction clutch.  This clutch is a vast improvement over the factory unit.  It grabs much better and holds.  Also it will hopefully last longer than the factory one. ***UPDATE: After running the turbo for a while this clutch has been worn out. I replaced it with a SPEC Stage III clutch with carbon fiber clutch material which should hold up better to the abuse from the turbo. See pictures of the worn out one and the new one here.

I installed a MSD DIS-4 ignition module and with the timing adjustments it gives it helps to retard the timing for the turbocharger and just make the ignition overall more powerful.

work in progress:

I am currently working on adding a CT-26 turbocharger from a Supra to my stock engine.  This turbo should be good for up to about 13psi if I fool the integral wastegate.  So far I have gotten the exhaust routed to the turbo and the oil feed line hooked up.  I started the car and spooled the turbo up a few times just to hear and feel it.  I still have the intake pipes and the oil return line left to do.  If I don't finish that before Spring Break I will definitely finish it up over Spring Break.  I also have a second complete 3.4l engine that I am going to build up with forged pistons once I find out how the turbo reacts to the stock compression ratio and cam profile.  I can't wait to see the effects of this turbo on my V6.  Here are some pics relating to the install.

***UPDATE: The turbo in now in with intercooler and can run a good 9-10 psi without detonating. I just need to make it back to the track to see how well I can run now.

Suspension:

A G2 adjustable panhard rod from T. Byrne Motorsports.  The rear seems to be a bit stiffer, things will get better once I install the rest of the suspension parts.

V8 Camaro take off front and rear springs, and front and rear shocks.  Both of these are from SLP.  These springs dramatically improved handling by overall stiffness and they actually raised the ride height a little which I like better because I don't bottom out anymore.

Front 1" 7/16"(hollow) and rear 1" Hotchkins sway bars available through T. Byrne.  This dramatically improved body roll and handling.

Rear T. Byrne control arms. This reduced that annoying wheel hop.

Energy Suspension transmission mount and torque arm bushing; noticed a little bit stiffer driveline from these.

Click here for some pictures of the suspension.

17" x 9" SS 5-star chrome rims from SLP and a set of 275x40x17 Kumho ECSTA Supra 712 tires.  These wheels look great and the tires are, in my opinion, the best tire for the money.  They dramatically improved traction on both dry and wet pavement and the increase from 16" to 17" rims made a big difference.  I can't feel that there is any sidewall deflection anymore.

Now that my suspension is pretty much taken care of all I need is some good engine mods and maybe I'd actually me able to take on a stock Z-28.  That's my dream anyway...

Here are a few drag strip time slips.  One is a nearly stock run and the other is my most recent run(November 2005).

Here's the best nearly-stock time that I have run in this car, a 16.498 @ 84.79mph.  I made this run with only the ram air and pulley modifications, and no suspension mods.

My car number was 120.  117 was a blown nitrous early 90's style Mustang and as you can see he wasted me.  But I was happy that I had my best run all night and that my reaction time was the best all night, .693, while the Mustang driver's was .742.

This is my best turbocharged time, a 14.277 @ 98.84mph.  This was with the T04E-60/T3 turbo, larger intercooler, custom EFI computer, and all of the other mods to date(November 2005).

This is pretty close to what a stock LT1 Z-28 runs...
