Implications
At present, the controversy over
censorship remains unresolved and will continue to be unsettled in the future
providing that the present form of discourse is maintained.
This is due to the men and women on both sides of the argument simply
rehashing their points without considering those of the opposition.
They believe repetition will lead to conviction, and subsequently, they
will benefit if others hold hallowed their same beliefs.
Therefore, most debaters’ agenda is to convert others to a similar
belief structure concerning “correct” social and governmental policies
regarding musical censorship. Shouldn’t
their agenda’s be about discussing, learning, and modifying accordingly their
own opinions? The latter would be
optimal for analytical engagement with one’s situations/surroundings, but from
experience, I can surmise that it is easier for us to stick by decisions made
than to reevaluate the situation. The
people of the censorship debate, and for most other debates for that matter,
focus solely on their agenda. It is
due to this common, but ineffectual agenda that only mere arguments are
produced. That is, a one-sided
agenda restricts the approach to the conversation to rehashing ones own beliefs,
and thus gears the conversation away from new insight and significant meaning.
Most debates over censorship follow the same structure of point,
counterpoint. This won’t
accomplish anything; no one will change his or her views.
Even further, people will immediately take a defensive stance, and become
stronger about their views. It is
for the above reasons why the past means others have evaluated and attacked the
problem have failed. The future
holds the same bickering if a new method of thoughtful analysis is not
initiated.
Therefore, after observing the aforementioned shortcomings in
this style of discourse, I quickly tried to problematize the issue and force analysis
towards consideration of the bigger picture.
