Date of checkup: 1 June 2002

Ah, the homestretch! The prenatal checkups are now weekly. While my estimated due date is June 29 (a mere four weeks away), we can't really tell when I would be making my so-called grand entrance. All we could do is wait and see. For Mom and Dad, these last few weeks are running so fast that they could barely think of what to do next. It seems that there are tonloads of things to take care of, so many concerns. They already bought an infant car seat for me, my Aunt Karen sent me some nice outfits (aw, those cute little booties!), Dad has already set up the crib in their room. Still they believe that there are still a lot of things to prepare, but I'm pretty sure they'll learn to do the rest along the way.

The GBS test last week turned a negative result. Hurrah! Another worry eliminated from the doctor's concerns. Curiously, my estimated weight is still around 3 kg, it's like I didn't gain any weight at all in the past week! Needless to say, the doctor is quite happy, relieved to say the least. He thinks my weight gain has finally hit its zenith.

Now, if only that were only true for Mom...:-)

In the know:
Receiving nutrition and elimination through the umbilical cord all this time has made it unnecessary for the baby's slowly developing gastrointestinal system to function much before birth. Even after birth, this system will still be physiologically immature until the child is three years old.

During the finishing period of the baby's development, fat is being laid down under the surface of the baby's skin, which will help the baby maintain an even body temperature and which can be burned as energy. Growth has slowed -- perhaps to conserve energy for the birth process.
