I was thrilled to find this website through FORCE magazine. Praise God. I had a mastectomy September 2005, after two lumpectomies that failed to get clean margins.

I was not happy with many people's reactions to my decisions for:
    1) Not having the other breast removed, and
    2) Not having reconstructive surgery.
One of the most hurtful comments was from a woman at church who said, "Well you are at least going to wear a prosthesis to church, aren't you?"

I decided to compose a "Top Ten" list similar to what they do on the David Letterman show for my reasons. I passed this list out to my breast surgeon and my oncologist, too. For people who want to understand, this list is meant to bring a smile to your face and understanding. For people who don't want to understand, or are incapable of understanding, I guess it is meant to silence you, if you can't laugh with me.

    List One:
TEP TEN REASONS FOR NOT GETTING THE OTHER BREAST REMOVED PROPHYLACTICALLY.

    1) It's my breast, not yours.
    2) I'll remove it, if it gets cancer.
    3) It only has pre-typia hyperplasia.
    4) It's my breast, not yours.
    5) I like getting mammograms every six months.
    6) It is okay to be lopsided.
    7) I wanna be a cyclope-tit (word made up by my daughter).
    8) I'll remove it when the time is right for me.
    9) It's my breast, not yours.
    10) (To be sung) "I'm not a perfect person, there are many things I wish I didn't do, and I'll continue learning . . . "

    List Two:
TOP TEN REASONS FOR NOT WANTING RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY WHILE HAVING A MASTECTOMY

    1) Isn't three hours of surgery enough for one day?
    2) I would get to go to the doctor many, many more times to be inflated . . .
    3) . . . and possibly more surgery.
    4) I have dense breasts.
    5) It makes if harder for future cancer to be found.
    6) Why would I want to put a foreign object in my body, after removing foreign objects?
    7) Just 'cause you think it is right, doesn't make it right for me.
    8) It is enough for me to just process having to have a mastectomy alone.
    9) I might like being flat.
    10) You don't have to look at me, and I don't have to look at you.

Thank you. Hope you are smiling.
