Room 206 Volunteer Needs

Room 206 could use a helping hand! Please come by our classrooom or call me at school (510)713-0141 x 53206 if you are interested in helping out.

  • Homework Folders - Weekly (By Monday)
  • Friday Folders - Weekly (By Friday)
  • Beat the Buzzer - 3 times a week / Half can be done at home and half at school (2 parents)
Beat the Buzzer is a timed math challenge to help students memorize their math facts. This is one of the most time consuming yet critical volunteer needs. Usually, it is split between 2 or more parents. One parent will have his/her student take home the Beat the Buzzer worksheets to grade and send it back to school the next day. The other parent(s) will pull the worksheets that morning for that day's Beat the Buzzer.
  • Prepare materials for art activities - As a need arises
  • Literacy Centers - MTWTh(F) / 8:55-9:20
Every morning we practice what we've been learning through hands on games and activities. If I have a parent or two in the classroom to help supervise and help out students, then I can pull a group of students at this time and work more closely with them.
  • Math Lab - Time to be determined (Need 4 or 5 parents each Friday)
In order to make Math Lab successful, a minimum of 4 parents is needed. Each parent will supervise a math activity for 4 students, then rotate to the next 4 students every 8-12 minutes. (on my mark)
  • Supervise field trips (Need 3-4 parents for each field trip)
We will have 4-5 field trips this year. Dates and times are still being determined. Usually a field trip takes half a day and each parent is assigned 4-5 students to supervise. Some field trips require more volunteers than others.
  • Help out with Art activities (Need 1-2 parents)
In first grade, we do a lot of art activities and having a parent or two help 20 first graders cut, paste, and assemble is so helpful!
  • Grade papers/homeworkAt your convenience - Can be completed at home
It's so hard to keep up with all the grading and I rely on help from the parents for some of this as do most of the other first grade teachers at Forest Park.
  • FAME - Once a month, usually 8:30-9:20
Present a famous artist or musician to the students of Room 206, then do an art project on the theme. The materials have been prepared by the FAME committee already although you can add/subtract from it. This is a good opportunity to be a teacher for an hour or just practice your public speaking. I will be in the classroom to assist you in any way.
  • PTA Representative - At your convenience. See the website Events page for dates.

  • Organize/help out with classroom parties - Occassional Fridays 2:25 - 2:45
Parents like to celebrate their child's birthdays so on the week of their birthday, parents can bring goodies to share on Friday for 15-20 minutes before students go home. Also, sometimes we have classroom parties to reward good behavior or special holidays.
