Essay #5
I must admit, that in the handful of jobs that I have acquired through my teenage years, businesses have improved tremendously on equal employment opportunities for both part-time and full-time employees. But still, in my experience, three out of five businesses still have nto caught up with the growing practices. Esepcially where teenagers are considered, businesses may not feel that they deserve full benefits, such as vacation and sick pay. It is as if they feel that we have not worked hard enough or lnog enough to earn such benefits. But how wrong they are. Thus, I propose part-time employees are offered the same benefits as full-time employees at the start of their employment.
Some businesses do offer these benefits to part-time employees, but only after they have worked for a year, while full-time employees rack up the benefits in the beginning. This completely negates equal opportunity. Full-time employees work just as diligently, and yet they must sacrafice their pay when sick or when they take vacation. If they work just as hard, don't they deserve the credit? This might encourage part-time employees to stay with the company long enough to gain their benefits but it is still very unfair. When vacation and sick pay is not offered, it discourages the employee to take the leave anyway. So going to work sick could unknowingly set off a chain reaction among other employees and customers. Not taking a deserved vacation may also be unhealthy. It could raise stress levels and alter one's mood in the work place. This might eventually negatively affect the business and other employees. So one simple solution can be taken to avoid a roaming cold among employees or unusually high stress. Offer benefits to part-time employees in the beginning. Maybe they will not stay with the business for more than a year, but improved work habits will occur, and employees will become more enjoyable to work with. But, to cut back on the abuse of these benefits, a business could possibly offer a limit to the amount of leave that can be taken in a month, and if not used in that month, it could easily stack with the next.
When a part-time employee works just as hard as a full-time employee it just sems very unfair to not receive the same benefits. They may only work half as many hours, but they should also be compensated. When it really comes down to it, the performance of a business's employees is what really matters, And to gain a high performance, you must treat them as equals.
